A decade on from the Qatar-Japan 2012 Year of Culture, Qatar Museums is bringing back its Manga Style! competition.
Qatari and resident manga enthusiasts are invited to submit their own visual stories that showcase both countries’ culture under the theme of friendship.
The first place winner will walk away with QR20,000, while the second and third place entrants will win QR15,000 and QR10,000 respectively.
All three mangas will be shared during the next Geekdom, which is set to be held as part of the Ajyal Film Festival in November.

Aisha Ghanem Al Attiya, director of cultural diplomacy at Qatar Museums, said, “The Years of Culture initiative has established a rich legacy of cooperation between Qatar and the 10 countries that have partnered with us in the decade since the initiative was launched.
“We are particularly honoured to have built long-lasting ties with our very first Year of Culture partner – Japan – that have only grown over the past decade.”
2022 marks the 50-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Japan, and 10 years on from the first ever Year of Culture.
The Manga Style! competition will be bring together the two country’s distinct cultural legacies, with the Arab world’s renowned oral storytelling traditions brought to life through vibrant manga-style illustrations.
You can submit your original stories, in either Arabic or English, through the Years of Culture website – yearsofculture.qa – from the start of May until July 31, 2022.
Entries are free, and applicants can submit up to three different stories, each with a minimum length of 16 pages.
Winners will be announced on the website, and on social media, with digital copies of the winning entries distributed in early September.
