If you’re moving to Doha or already living here, getting a health card as soon as you land in Qatar is absolutely essential, especially because private healthcare is expensive and government healthcare is provided for free for all citizens and residents of the country via Hamad Medical Corporation.
In the absence of a good health insurance plan, you will need to turn to Hamad General Hospital and Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCC) for all your medical needs.
From consultations and blood tests to surgeries and medication, including for mental health, everything is free of charge or heavily subsidised in Hamad and PHCC. The Hamad health card will have your ID number, nationality, photo and date of issue.
In order to access these services from Hamad Medical Corporation, you’ll need a health card and here’s how you can get one.
Visit your nearest Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC). Each area has a designated health care centre and if you’re unsure which one is closest to you, click here to find out or call 107.
Request for the healthcare application, fill it up and submit it along with the required documents (detailed below) and get your PHCC health file number.
Make the payment via debit/credit card. No other form of payment is accepted. If you don’t have your own, you can bring a friend or relative along and use theirs.
Collect your health card the same day or the next, depending on the information provided by the counter staff.
The following documents will need to be submitted along with the healthcare application.
Valid Qatari ID
Passport size photographs (two)
A copy of utility bill (water, electricity or phone)
Vaccination card and birth certificate for children.
The fee for Qataris or GCC citizens is QR50. Expat residents have to pay QR100 and domestic workers QR50. Children born in Qatar can access medical facilities for free for the first year.
The health card application along with your documents can be submitted only from 7.30am until 2pm on weekdays.
The card is valid for one year for expats and has to be renewed on a yearly basis. The health card can be renewed online here.
If you lose your health card but it’s still valid, you’ll have to pay QR100 for a replacement. If you lose it and it has expired, you’ll have to pay QR200 for a new health card.
