One of the greatest collections of German contemporary art is on display in Doha this month. 2017 is the Qatar Germany Year of Culture and as part of this initiative, Qatar Museums has collaborated with the Deutsche Bank Collection to ship over more than 100 works by 27 of Germany’s most significant contemporary artists.
None of these works have ever been showcased in the region before. The exhibition, German Encounters: Contemporary Masterworks from the Deutsche Bank Collection, delves into the history of the Deutsche Bank Collection as well as the history of modern German creativity. Some of the highlights include Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter’s Capitalist Realism paintings in response to American Pop Art, as well as the works of Neo Rauch.
The exhibition is displayed across five sections, each highlighting different aspects of the development of this genre. Live speakers will also guide the public through the various workshops and activities for young audiences. And the exhibition also aims to inspire local collectors and companies to present their works in public and discover more about contemporary art.
Deutsche Bank’s art initiatives aim to create access to art and promote creativity, meaning a series of educational events, developed with the Goethe-Insitut, are taking place as well. Besides discovering Germany’s contemporary art history, the programme will also give insight into topics like corporate collecting and much more.
Free entry. Until January 20, 2018. Open Sat-Thu 9am-7pm, Fri 1pm-7pm. QM’s Garage Gallery, Doha Fire Station, Civil Defense Roundabout (4422 4222).
