Yum Yum

A restaurant with great potential, but it needs an overhaul

Time Out Says

Yum Yum is pretty well known in local foodie circles. This international restaurant, perched on the 10th floor of K 108 Hotel, overlooks old and new Doha. The best time to go here is for an early dinner at 6pm, for a chance to end your meal with a view of the beautiful skyline all lit up after sunset, through large floor-to-ceiling windows across the length of the space.

While you soak in this far view (we specify far because you can only see beaten-down houses and heavy construction near), be prepared for some majorly hit-and-miss food. The service is quick, we see our starters on the table in a matter of minutes. The crispy foie gras roll is on a bed of warm, caramelised apples that balance out the sour flavour of the roll. We are disappointed with the portion size, and it is too oily, but the taste makes up for it. The shrimp tempura, on the other hand, is far from pleasant. Neither the shrimp, nor the lettuce leaves on the side, feel fresh. The tempura batter is not fried to a crisp and the lettuce has a bitter, almost acrid taste to it.

We’ve heard a lot about their burger (which weirdly isn’t on the menu), so follow with the cheeseburger. Sadly, the bun is of questionable quality and ruins what could have been the perfect taste of a juicy beef patty cooked to medium. The lamb tajine with dry fruits comes out on, surprisingly, a regular plate. We were expecting an actual tajine, considering it costs QR98. Needless to say, it lacks the qualities of this flavourful Moroccan speciality, and is overly sweet.

The service is fine, but we were expecting more finesse. We can’t ignore the excellent presentation of every other dish they serve. The restaurant has a lot of potential; service is good, seating is comfortable and the ambience is pleasant. Some of the food is overpriced, though.

If they pay more attention to the quality of what’s on the plate, we will have a meal to match the enviable location.

The Bill (for two)
1x foie gras QR60
1x shrimp tempura QR55
1x cheeseburger QR65
1x lamb tajine QR98
Total QR278

The bottom line
Average food in an almost perfect, slightly romantic setting.
