Tofu House

Don’t miss some of the most authentic Korean cuisine in the city

Time Out Says

Doha finally has a Korean spot that can take the fight to its Thai, Chinese and Japanese competition.

It’s miniscule, with a row of bar-style seats downstairs and a tiny dining room upstairs. The menu isn’t huge either, but don’t be put off. The tofu rice is standout (though veggies be warned, it’s full of meat), as is the sensationally crispy and sweet fried chicken. This is also the first time that we’ve found a tteokbokki (gloriously gluttinous rice cakes and fish cakes in a seriously spicy red chilli sauce) worthy of Korean street food markets. The bulgogi bibimbap is similarly excellent – it’s been made with some of the tastiest meat we’ve tried in a while and is satisfyingly crisp on the bottom.

This spot is quintessentially Korean but, strangely, traditional sides (kimchi et al) are conspicuously absent from the meal. Portions are huge, and ideal for sharing. The japchae comes as a huge plate piled with noodles and rice, and the fiery seafood soup is practically wok-sized.

Head here for an extra-spicy alternative to your usual cheap Thai meal. You won’t be disappointed.

The bottom line
Cheap, cheerful and authentic, Tofu House just might be Doha’s next cult favourite budget restaurant.
