The Chemist Café

A fun experience with excellent coffees in a lab-themed space

Time Out Says

As die hard, eternal fans of the greatest show ever made, Breaking Bad, we’re more than pleased when we enter The Chemist Café in B Square Mall. Not only is the entire café lab-themed, Breaking Bad is actually playing on their TV. It’s not a huge space, but it is cosy, and there’s a bright green couch to attract us.

There is an interesting selection of coffees including a V60 and chemex (for coffee connoisseurs out there). We go for the chemex. The Ethiopian coffee used smells exquisite and after three levels of filtering, we taste a delicious and light, syrupy coffee with hints of blueberry and pink grapefruit. We also choose an ice-based, citrusy beverage called Crystal M (Breaking Bad fans will remember this) and it is fruity, fresh and very well presented in something that we remember using in the school chemistry lab years ago.

This café, although nice for beverages, has a long way to go in the food department. There’s no food menu sadly, but it has a few sandwiches on display and some chips. We try the turkey and cheese sandwich and it’s your average, everyday grab-and-go kind of thing – not very appealing for a café that’s put so much effort into the décor and the coffees. The beaker brownie is better – full points for presentation – but other than the addition of Coco Pops, it’s a regular brownie and ice-cream dessert with espresso poured on top. If you’re done with all the coffee by now, you could choose the Lotus option instead. The dessert menu is decent and they have a few of them on display, too.

The servers look adorable – dressed in full body suits, just like in Breaking Bad, and really complete the ambience.

The service could be a bit more efficient and attentive but the incredible selection of coffees and the setting will make us come back.

The bottom line
A super selection of reasonably priced coffees with a cool theme.
