Spicy Pickle

New café at The Gate Mall attracts a good post-work crowd

Time Out Says

This might be a personal thing but I often find it hard to think of a place to go for lunch or dinner that serves light bites that resemble something that at least pretends to be healthy. That’s why, when I found out about the opening of a new café at The Gate Mall, I didn’t hesitate to try it.

It’s a simple and quaint little place around the back of the mall with indoor and outdoor seating, takeaway options and even a home delivery menu. Originally from Denver, Colorado in the US, Spicy Pickle was set up to be a fast-casual restaurant with fresh café fare. Something Doha does not have an abundance of.

The menu is just the right size, with options for carnivores, fish lovers and vegetarians. Vegans would even find it easy to eat here! You can choose from flatbread pizzas, paninis, sandwiches, soups, salads and wraps, that come with sides of your choice of salad plus, of course, the obligatory spicy pickle (which is actually more sweet than spice).

You can even find combo box options that offer deals for half a sandwich, a soup and a drink, as well as others. On our trip we go for the Aphrodite pizza, the Baja shrimp and Pepperjack cheese panini, and a spinach salad, all to share.

The salad comes first and it mixes fresh spinach leaves, apples, walnuts, bleu cheese crumbles with an apple cider vinaigrette dressing – a fabulous combination of fresh and beautiful flavours that really hits the spot.
As we tuck in, out comes our Baja panini, which I have to say is giant (I’m glad I’m sharing!). It is delicious though. The shrimp is beautifully cooked and the cheese just oozes with flavour and over the sides of the toasted bread. It also comes with our choice of side salad that combines broccoli, yoghurt, grapes and nuts – it’s almost like a healthy but sweet twist on coleslaw, and it’s hard not to like. Overall it’s a very hearty but tasty meal option.

Meanwhile, out comes the Aphrodite, which is a vegetarian flatbread pizza that has on it artichoke hearts, olives, feta cheese, onion, mozzarella, tomato and plenty of oregano. This, unfortunately, is the weak link in our experience as, although it’s generally cooked well, the flavours really fall short in comparison.

We leave feeling happy, however, because we’ve found a place that caters for a range of tastes and offers us something very fresh. The service is friendly, the price is reasonable and you can even go all out with dessert and a big bag of crisps (we did!). Sorted.
