Shanghai Club

Chinese restaurant treads the line between good and exceptional

Time Out Says

Everything about Shanghai Club encapsulates the vibrant, cosmopolitan, contemporary spirit of China’s biggest city. It’s full of bright neon lights, clear acrylic, glittering crystal chandeliers, black and white photos of old Shanghai, whimsical oil paintings, traditional Chinese masks and dragon motifs. And then there’s the blinking panorama of West Bay through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows that could almost (...almost) pass for downtown Shanghai.

From the décor to the pop-arty menus and the thumping lounge music (loud without being oppressive), the overall effect is cool, unique and glamorous.

It’s a shame, then, that the food is hit and miss. We do enjoy everything that we try, it’s just that very few dishes live up to the standards of the setting.

The sweet and sour chicken, for example, is clearly of a higher quality than at your usual go-to Chinese, and we love the addition of dragon fruit over pineapple, but in terms of taste and presentation, it’s nothing to prompt a return visit. The same can be said of the wok-fried wagyu with mushrooms and asparagus, though the signature lobster mapo tofu is deliciously meaty and spicy.

The chicken and truffle xiao long bao are also exceptional. These little dumplings are filled with a chicken broth that’s so full of delicate, rich flavour that we are truly blown away.

This kind of contrast is present in each course. We love the melting mandarine dessert, but the black sesame panna cotta – though intriguing, and pleasantly flavoured – lacks the smooth, firm texture of the pudding.
This place can still hold its own against the city’s other popular restaurants, and it has heaps of potential, so we look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength.

The Bottom Line
A super-cool setting, slightly better-than-average food, and plenty of potential.
