It’s easy to picture beautiful sunsets, white walls and crystal blue seas when you hear the word Santorini. That’s what we’re expecting when we visit Shangri-La’s Greek diner and while the entrance has a cute, Santorini-style, dining table set up, the insides don’t really scream idyllic Greek island.

A subtle refurb of the space formerly occupied by seafood restaurant Yabby, with the exception of the carpet, it’s a tranquil ocean of cream and marine, complete with the same tank of mildly curious fish, now swimming to traditional Greek folk music in the background.
Santorini has a small menu but, luckily, it still has a good variety of options. While deliberating our choices, we tuck into some crisp bread accompanied by a very addictive, tangy pepper and sun-dried tomato paste. A selection of cold mezzes that aren’t on the main menu but on a giant tray held aloft by a server appears in front of us. But we’ve already ordered hot appetisers.

We start with a tiganiti feta, a rich concoction of half-crumbly, half-creamy feta cheese, wrapped in a crisp honey and sesame shell. Delicious. The htapodi, a medley of grilled octopus with a chickpea purée, is next. The octopus is drowning in lemon and the chickpea purée doesn’t really go well with the octopus. For mains, we stick to classics – souvlaki and moussaka. Skewers of chicken and beef with trimmings of salad, wedges and flatbread are plated wonderfully but the dish isn’t as comforting as we expect. The moussaka, however, really hits the spot. Encased in a bubbling cauldron of a molten, cheesy lake, the meat and aubergine flavours blend wonderfully with each other and the result is an excellent Greek classic.

For some traditional action, try the Opa! (dessert) which consists of flavoured sorbet and comes with a sugar-plate that can be smashed to smithereens. And the only damage you’ll have to worry about is the bill.
