Sabai Thai

This exciting new South East Asian spot is the talk of the town

Time Out Says

As you walk into Sabai Thai, the new restaurant at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, you’re transported straight to the South East of Asia. A lady, playing traditional drums, greets us on arrival and we’re taken by the friendly hostess through the ornately decorated venue to our beautifully adorned wooden table, which is all reminiscent of the Royal Palaces of Thailand. This is also reflected in the menu, which features authentic yet modern interpretations of Royal Thai cuisine.

Despite having only been open just a few months, Sabai Thai is bustling the night we go.

Large tables for big parties are placed in more private, screened off rooms, while we take our seats in the main dining area, which is spacious, and allows diners privacy.

Looking through the menu, we find a wide range of tempting, classic dishes. While we order the pad Thai goong sood – a delicious, but very spicy, dish of stir-fried rice noodles with fresh prawns, bean sprouts, tofu and peanuts – and the gaeng khiew waan phak – a vibrant green curry with vegetables and tofu that’ll blow your head off – we also try and be a bit more adventurous in our tastes. Unfortunately, we find our choice of baked whole sea bass unavailable, but are happy to go with the suggested seau rong hai; a light and lean plate of nicely grilled, marinated beef sirloin, which you can dip into an intensely flavoured sauce that balances hot, sweet and sour notes perfectly.

We finish off in a unique, sweet way, with the khow niew mamaung. This coconut sticky rice with mango is not only tasty, but also visually stunning, thanks to the butterfly pea flower it’s been infused with and which has turned it blue.
Sabai Thai certainly has a lot of style, and it definitely doesn’t lack any substance, either.
