Allow us to introduce you to Pearl Social in Marsa Malaz Kempinski. The latest addition to UK-based celebrity chef Jason Atherton’s ‘Social’ family of eateries offers modern British fine-dining in an elegantly styled restaurant. What exactly is modern-British cuisine, we hear you cry? We’re not entirely sure, but if the menu at the Pearl Social is anything to go by, it’s European-influenced dishes with a classic British roast every Saturday.

We start our meal with a salad packed with snow peas, feta, mint and radish. Its crunchy texture and light, delicate flavours leave us wanting more. It’s accompanied by a small selection of fresh bread in a basket, which we are grateful is not topped up by the time we devour at least four rolls each.

The pasta looks tempting for main course, freshly made in house and served al dente, but we are swayed by some of the surf and turf options. We opt for the roast chicken served with a green vegetable hash, artichokes and baby onions and a salmon with butternut squash and chickpea tagine, topped with saffron yoghurt. Both dishes are gracefully presented, cooked exceptionally well and packed full of flavour.

After a disappointing brunch experience recently, we’re almost convinced Pearl Social knows what it’s doing in the à la carte fine-dining stakes.

It’s in the desert department that Pearl Social’s British origins come to the fore – on the menu are classics like Eton mess and sticky toffee pudding. We choose a banoffee cheesecake, which thankfully isn’t sickly sweet and really hits the spot. We’re also served complimentary pistachio and polenta cake with our post-dinner espressos.

Pearl Social’s setting is refined with large tables, sophisticated leather chairs, bronze fixtures and decorative elements and beautiful blue crockery. It is on the pricier side, but by now, we’ve come to expect this from high-end restaurants in Doha.

The only drawback of Pearl Social is that it isn’t, well, more social. We’re here on a Saturday night and barely any tables are occupied. It’s a shame the ambience is lacking because now we know the food is good and we’re definitely visiting again to try the some of the more expensive dishes.
