Oriental Kitchen

Authentic and inexpensive Chinese-Malay food in Doha

Time Out Says

On the back of Oriental Kitchen bagging our Best Budget Restaurant accolade at the Time Out Doha Restaurant Awards 2016, we make a pit-stop at the humble, bright red venue on Al Khalidiya Street.

As usual, the place is buzzing with people of every nationality looking for a true taste of the Far East, with the focus on Malaysian-style Chinese food and influences from Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

In particular, Oriental Kitchen is well-known for offering Chinese-Malay expats authentic dishes from back home and responsible for introducing many newbies to a vibrant cuisine.

Unless you’re really splashing out (on fish heads and the like), you’ll find it hard to spend more than QR40 on a dish (and, for the most part, these QR40 dishes are good enough for two to three people, thanks to the incredibly generous portions).

Everything from the hot and sour tofu soup to the perennial kung pao chicken and the stir-fried beef with black bean sauce adorns the varied and tasty menu.

We start off with the vegetable spring rolls and fried fish balls, both of which are excellent precursors to an overall delicious meal (admittedly, however, these dishes are also fairly oily).

As this is the spot for a smashing butter prawn dish, this is a must-order in our books, along with the marmite chicken. The butter prawn delivers everything it promises – it’s richly flavoured and well cooked, and the kind of dish you’d go back to a restaurant specifically for. Meanwhile, the marmite chicken is juicy, sweet and sour. It’s surprising, especially to the marmite-hater on the table, who finishes the plate.

Whether you’re an old hand or a complete first-timer to Chinese-Malay food, this is a restaurant that consistently delivers great flavour and a humble atmosphere, which is why we keep on going back.
