Olive

Pleasant, family-style restaurant serving up international cuisine

Time Out Says

If you’re ever down this dusty back end of Doha a new restaurant has opened. You’ll spot it immediately. Just look out for a bright green shop front, and five or six eager waiters milling about the front entrance. This is Olive – ‘the name you always whisper’, according to the menu. But we’re not sure the menu can be trusted. It does contain some truthful statements like, ‘Olive restaurant offers Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Continental dining.’ But then there’s a statement such as this one: ‘Olive features an extensive olive list with interesting, unusual and hard-to-find olives.’ We tried and failed numerous times to enquire about this so-called olive list, but got nothing but blank stares and shoulder shrugs.

We eventually had to admit defeat; the olive list simply doesn’t exist. What does exist is a pleasant, family style restaurant, brightly decorated with lime green and yellow furniture and booth-style seating upstairs where you can take your pick from a lunchtime buffet (or choose from a mammoth international menu). It’s cheap and cheerful – the most expensive dish is QR35. And if you like south-Indian food we can heartily recommend the fish molee – a spicy, tasty fish curry garnished with fresh tomatoes and green peppers, perfectly mopped up with some chapatti bread.

For the sake of experiment, we ordered something Arabic, choosing a fattoush salad. Imagine how dumbfounded we were when, scattered among the peppers, tomatoes and red onion, we spotted a smattering of green olives! We don’t mean to give Olive a bad rap – the dining experience was pleasant enough – but the elusive olive list debacle? We’re still chuckling about it now.
