Time Out Says

Time Out doesn’t just write glowing reviews all the time – we’re not that kind of magazine. When we say something is good, it’s good. So believe us when we say that Nobu is very good.

Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s first restaurant, using only his surname, “Matsuhisa,” opened in Beverly Hills in 1987. This is where he met his long-term friend Robert De Niro (yes, the chap from The Godfather 2), and the business partners have been spreading across the world with Nobu restaurants ever since. It was only a matter of time before it came to our shores.

Predominantly Japanese selections with Latin American hints (a nod to the chef moving to Peru to open a sushi bar), the chain was much-awaited in Doha and finally opened up earlier this year.

Driving to the restaurant is an experience in itself. Lights guide you along to a private island on the Gulf, taking you to what is the largest Nobu restaurant on the planet. This isn’t our first visit, and just like before, we agree the décor and ambiance is just right. Trendy, modern music is played so we can hear it well but conversation is not interrupted. The two indoor bars are perfect for sitting and chilling, too; but we opt to sit and admire the chic chandeliers at the dinner table.

The menu is as vast as it is eclectic: Nobu bites, cold dishes, hot dishes, oven dishes, tempuras, sushis, sashimis, yakimono selections and a lot more, fusing traditional Japanese cuisine and other Latin influences to make a menu to marvel at.

Our highest recommendation is still the signature black cod with yuzu and miso. We are simply wowed by the sweetness of the miso baste and the flaky perfection of the cod as our chopsticks dive into it. A slight citrus tang from the yuzu fruit rounds off the flavours. It’s a generous portion of fish but vanishes in no time.
This is closely followed by the surprise of the evening, the shiromi usuzukuri. Sea bass sliced so thin to the point of translucence treads in a light ponzu dressing. The acidity of the vinegary, soy-based sauce gives it enough of an edge without detracting from the subtle, fresh and delicate flavour of the sea bass. It’s fair to say we’re hooked.

We wish we had ordered more of the mini tacos when they arrive to our plate… mini being the imperative word. We choose the scallop tacos, light to taste, but note the accompanying tomato salsa is a little garlic heavy and the dish a little excessive at QR110.

All our other selections vary from very good to outstanding, including the rock shrimp tempura and crispy rice with yellowtail accompaniment, as well as an excellent salmon skin sushi platter.

Yet the wow factor of the entire menu is somewhat dimmed when dessert rolls around. The cheesecake with raspberry and wasabi sorbet lacks the punch and eye-watering slap we expect (and desire) from wasabi. While the miso chocolate sphere is functional but, in comparison with the rest of the meal, forgettable. What a far cry indeed from our other miso dish – that lip-smacking cod.

Smart cuisine, smart prices. It comes with the territory we’re afraid. Dishes are small so be careful you don’t order too much or too lavishly. But as long as you are also smart with your ordering, you may still have a bank account worthy of the name at the end of it.

The hype around Nobu, long before it opened, was incredible. Safe to say: it is worth the wait.
