Time Out Says

The minute you set foot into this fine-dining Turkish restaurant, you get a sense of how authentic the food will be. It looks and feels the part and there’s just something about the place that gives off an aura of excellence. We’ve only been inside a few minutes but we somehow know the food is going to be great.

The greyish blue walls, and the traditional Turkish plates and other items that adorn them make it feel like you’re in Turkey. In fact, the décor isn’t a million miles away from the original venue in Istanbul.

There’s an attractive bar area and the large blue-tiled columns in the room have a striking presence. You’ll notice there’s an open kitchen and if you’re like us, you’ll love watching the chefs work their magic.

If it’s Turkish you want, it’s Turkish you’ll get here – from the music to the menu (it’s in Turkish with English descriptions) to the waiting staff and chefs in the kitchen.

The waiter runs us through the specialities on offer before bringing a tray of cold mezze for us to choose from.

An aubergine dip comes recommended so we go for that. Called kopoglu, it is a mix of yoghurt in a slightly tangy tomato sauce, with light, tasty aubergine flavoured with chilli. It’s a great small dish to start with, especially when you have it with the freshly baked Turkish bread, topped with sesame seeds.

Next up we try the lahmacun. The thin, crispy bread is up there with the best in the city. Topped with meat, herbs, onions and tomatoes, it’s just perfect.

We’ve heard lots about the doner and cig kofte, but neither are available on this visit, we plump for the cop sis (cubed lamb) and the baskose kebab (minced lamb with spices). The lamb cubes are incredibly tender (as a result of being marinated in milk for hours) and the kebab, made with Turkish lamb (of course) looks and tastes beautiful.

The bill (for two)

1x kopoglu QR35
1x lahmacun QR45
1x cop sis QR95
1x Baskose kebab QR95
Total (excluding service) QR275

The bottom line

A terrific Turkish experience.
