A brand-new Azerbaijani restaurant in Souq Waqif

Time Out Says

We love that we can find almost any world cuisine in Doha and when we pass by a new Azerbaijani restaurant in Souq Waqif, we can’t resist trying out some hopefully authentic food. We pick the al fresco area because it overlooks the Souq streets, but there’s an indoor space and a rooftop.

The menu is comprehensive and has enough items to give you a real taste of Azerbaijan. We start off with a typical gutab with lamb. The Azerbaijani-style lavash is similar to an Arabic saj.  Thinly-rolled flat bread is stuffed with meat, basted in butter and dusted with sumac. It’s a warm, comforting dish and a good way to whet our appetites for the mains.

The vine leaves stuffed with minced meat arrive first. The lamb with rice inside is wonderfully spiced and the portion is decent. A bread-crusted cast iron pan filled with delicious fried beef is placed on our table next. Popularly known as ovruste pilaf, the meat comes with a light gravy. There’s sweetness from dry plums and cherry sauce but the buttery saffron rice on the side beautifully balances it out. We recommend trying the beef with some of the crispy dough on top.

The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. It’s the kind of spot we can keep coming back to, thanks to its prime location and excellent dishes. We’re trying the lavangi and kebabs next time.
