The celebrity chef-owned restaurant is well worth the hype

Time Out Says

If we had to pick one word to describe Morimoto, it would be “spectacular”.

Thankfully, we’ve got room to tell you a bit more.

There’s an open sushi counter and the main dining area has a glorious display of hanging lamps reminiscent of Japanese monuments in Nara. The restaurant is absolutely stunning.

With all the Japanese names on the menu, our waiter, thankfully, is a great help. We start off with the rock shrimp tempura, which is unlike any other in Doha. The portion is split between a version coated with wasabi aioli – slightly sweet, perfectly pungent and overall brilliant – and one with spicy gochujang sauce, which is similar to Buffalo wings. The ranch dressing on the side is addictive, too.

We move on to some spicy Alaskan king crab. The portion is satisfactory, but the taste is exemplary, thanks to its luxury sauce – a mix of tobanchan and tobiko (flying fish roe) and aioli. The crab meat is fresh and there’s a nice pop with every bite from the tobiko.

The tenderest, most delicious lamb shank arrives next. It’s on the sweet side, but it goes perfectly with the creamy saffron risotto. We can’t think of one single thing the restaurant could do better.

The bottom line
A sublime, luxurious and contemporary take on traditional Japanese food.
