Marsa Katara

A beautifully located restaurant with Maldivian vibes

Time Out Says

After several weeks of incredible hype, we head over to Marsa Katara, the newest addition to Katara Cultural Village’s dining offerings. We have very high hopes and as we ride a golf cart across a small bridge with Maldives-style overwater villas on either side, we are almost sure this restaurant is going to exceed our expectations.

The staff at the receiving counter are completely oblivious to our arrival and after being ignored for a few minutes, we let ourselves in. We wait for about 30 minutes to receive a menu. There are dozens of staff on the floor (and a manager), however, not even one looks our way.

We finally order a pepper-3 as our appetiser and thankfully, the dish tastes so good that we forget how inefficient the service is for a while. Peppers are mashed with eggplant, cumin yoghurt and roasted red pepper jam. The dish, which comes with freshly baked bread, is wonderfully creamy and absolutely delicious.

The host insists we try the best-selling melting ribs for mains and we oblige. Black Angus chilli-spiced short ribs are served alongside herbed yoghurt and sweet potato chips. The dish is incredibly dry and tasteless and for QR240, it’s an utter disappointment. The host argues back with “but it’s our best seller” when we give our feedback.

The beach-themed restaurant has exquisite views with glistening turquoise waters. If there’s any reason to come back, it is definitely not the food or service.
