A restaurant serving Japanese dishes with Mediterranean touches

Time Out Says

We’re more than glad to see the addition of contemporary Japanese restaurant Maki in Doha Festival City. It’s a quiet Saturday afternoon and we make our way past the corridor seating area towards the main dining hall. The music, however, is too loud inside, so we choose to dine in the corridor area.

The iPad menu is quite extensive and all items have pictures which is great. The prices, however, are not representative of the overall ambience. Napkins are missing and the entire table layout is not aesthetically pleasing.

We start off well with some really friendly staff who are more than eager to assist. However, things take an unexpected turn when the mains arrive before the appetisers, despite us specifically asking for the starters to be served first. The certified Angus beef is slightly chewy and lacks flavour. The mixed fried rice is the better choice. We’d be really surprised if anything went wrong with a simple fried rice. The special prawn tempura, our starter, is the best dish so far. It’s juicy, crunchy and comes in a good portion size.

The Dr Zain ume maki, our other choice of appetiser which arrives after the mains, looks nothing like the picture on the menu. Contrary to its description, it has a rather unpleasant taste.

Overall, the restaurant has quite a few crinkles to iron out and since it is still in its soft opening phase, we’re expecting a host of improvements to start showing over the next few months.
