Lina’s Paris

We're struggling to find the chic in this Parisian joint

Time Out Says

According to the press release of this newly opened café in Ezdan Mall, Lina’s Paris has a ‘passion for food and hospitality’. While I do believe this is their ultimate aim, they’re not quite there yet.

The café is based in Ezdan Mall, with seating inside and out, which makes it handy for a bite while shopping so a friend and I head over there one afternoon. We sit next to the counter and although a couple of the many staff look in our direction, it takes some time before we are given a menu. It seems as though they’re rushed off their feet and having to run around in a very confined area. It’s definitely not conducive to a relaxing lunch environment.

The servers are friendly and we like the menu though. There is a good range of salads and sandwiches, plus a ‘light’ section. It’s a refreshing change from most other in-mall eateries. We’re feeling healthy so we go for a salad each. I choose the classic Nicoise salad with a carrot juice and my friend goes for the more unusual quinoa salad with chicken and a cranberry juice. We both go for the balsamic vinegar salad dressing.

Our juices come out after there is a little mix up with mine – I’m informed they’re out of carrot, then it’s back on but I get the wrong order – and we’re a little disappointed with the cranberry juice. It’s refreshing but nothing I couldn’t buy at the supermarket. On the other hand, the carrot juice was worth the palaver as it’s very fresh and tasty.

We’re particularly impressed with the quinoa and chicken salad. It’s a good size for lunch and with a mix of rocca, cucumber, tomato, chives, purslan and dried cranberries, it’s a really interesting and delicious meal. My Nicoise on the other hand is average. Canned tuna, graying hard-boiled eggs, tasteless boiled potatoes and the rest – it’s not bad but nothing I’d write home about.

Once we’ve had our salad fill, we decide to share a brownie. Again, we’re not blown away as a cocoa powder flavour overwhelms. There’s just no detectable Parisian flair.

Overall, we like the menu choice and the prices are reasonable but we aren’t overly impressed with the execution, atmosphere or décor. We hope this is just newly-opened-café teething issues, however, and that the experience will improve.
