And tucked away in the corner of a very worthy location in Doha – Al Hazm Mall – is a recreation of that same restaurant, and the first branch outside of Paris.
The blue lights from the neon signage attracts us from far away and as we walk in, we’re flabbergasted by what we see.
It’s a Parisian monument right in here in Doha. The same paintings are recreated on the ceilings, the same blue seats are set out around tables and the same beautiful gold carvings adorn the walls. It takes a while to absorb it all, but eventually, we feel ready to order.
We start with the salmon starter, which is delightfully simple in presentation, but heightened in taste with a beautiful citrus-scented cream and salmon roe on top.
However, the ravioli from the hot starters menu tops it. Ample discs of pasta are filled with a soft butternut lemon confit and are doused in the most delicious and creamy Parmesan sauce.
For the mains, we pick the sea bream with artichoke, carrot and zucchini, and a sweet saffron, citrus and honey reduction, and a slow-cooked lamb shank. The meat is carved at our table and the maître d’ pours a deliciously spiced jus on top. Gratin Dauphinoise comes alongside, adding a buttery richness that perfectly complements the tender lamb.
We end our meal with the restaurant’s signature Black Forest dessert, which is served in the shape of a cherry, and there isn’t a better way to say au revoir to what feels like a picture-perfect evening in Paris.
