A Pakistani eatery in Souq Al Wakrah

Time Out Says

Souq al wakrah is the ideal location for a nice stroll, walk through alleyways and enjoy some shopping before picking a spot for a relaxing dinner. We’re craving aromatic spices and rich flavours, so we head over to Lal Qila, a little Pakistani spot right behind Souq Al Wakrah’s police station. The setting is basic – typical pista-green walls and lots of chairs. There’s a budget buffet option for QR55 but we’d rather choose our favourites from the à la carte.

We start with a classic chicken corn soup. It is slightly bland and we decide to skip to mains. The mutton karahi is better – delectable tender cubes of mutton are cooked in a rich, spicy gravy with a tinge of sweetness from the fried onions on top. We’re happy with the portion size but little disappointed at how less the gravy is.

The mixed grill platter has four varieties of kebabs but we’re obsessed with the chicken one, better than the seekh kebabs by a mile. The piping hot kalonji naan and Lahori kulcha (Pakistani breads) go perfectly with the gravy, as well as the kebabs.

We really wish the staff were a little more attentive – we get a fizzy beverage out of a can instead of the fresh lime juice we ordered. The food, however, is exactly what we hoped it would be and possibly even better – spicy, packed with flavour and absolutely delicious. It’s not the most relaxed place to dine in, but it’s good enough for a family dinner with loud conversations.
