Katsuya by Starck

This popular Japanese diner doesn’t live up to expectations

Time Out Says

You perhaps wouldn’t expect a Japanese diner such as Katsuya to be located within a mall, but once you step in, you disengage from the mall chaos and, luckily, it’s peaceful inside with some groovy tunes playing. Phillipe Starck’s décor is modern yet cosy, with warm lighting and interesting artworks adorning the walls.

We start with the crispy rock shrimp that’s pretty much what you find in every Japanese spot. While it’s mildly spicy and overall tasty, it’s not standout. The spicy albacore with crispy onion roll really hits the spot however. It’s fresh with brilliant citrusy flavours complimenting the spicy yellowtail very well.

For the mains, the dynamite lobster looks really good on paper but there’s no “dynamite” and tastewise, the creamy white sauce tastes like off mayonnaise on lobster. We order a beef ramen which comes highly recommended but the dish is surprisingly below average.

There’s absolutely no flavour and the broth can’t even be salvaged after multiple teaspoons of soy sauce. We send it back and, luckily, it’s replaced with an incredible double chocolate lava cake. Warm, gooey, molten chocolate cake is topped with salted caramel and English cream and served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. All our pains melt away.

The bottom line
Hit-and-miss food but the lava cake is admittedly life-changing.
