Time Out Says

Let’s cut to the chase and fast-forward this. So we have just had our main courses and look at the menu for the dessert options. As we gaze at the page, we notice they’re serving a Nutella pizza with strawberries and bananas on top. It’s a no brainer; it’s ordered. As we feast away at our pizza, we are both in agreement that no other dish during our whole meal even comes close to this. The Nutella tastes like…well…Nutella, smeared all over a pizza base and complemented with the fruits to add extra flavour, texture and sweetness, also making the dish a little less heavy in the process. We are wowed.

As we devour this, we note the panna cotta sitting lonely, untouched. Yet, the panna cotta itself is another highlight – a little thicker in texture than usual but still pleasant. The strawberry sauce coating it, however, is far too sweet and sugary.

But now we’ve got that out of the way, we’ll rewind... Nestled in a side street in Souq Waqif, Italia Mia is a bright, airy and family-friendly Italian spot that’s as great for tourists as it is for long-term residents.

While the service is a little sporadic, with language barriers getting in the way, the classic variety of food is easily discernible. For starters, we go for the bresaola carpaccio and a potato and mushroom soup. We agree that both are hearty, to say the least. The soup is thick, a bit thicker than we would have liked, but the bresaola is a veritable meat feast. Lettuce and tomatoes are placed on the plate, almost as if they were a health-conscious afterthought, because the plate is predominantly made up of strong parmesan cheese and beef. Good for those with a carnivorous appetite, but we feel the dish is lacking a few subtleties and that bit of finesse required to make it a great dish.

For our mains, we pair a typical Italian classic with something a little more unique.

We opt for the spinach and ricotta ravioli and determine that a pizza dish is a must. Rather like the chocolate pizza, one sticks out like a shining beacon - the Salmone e Philadelphia pizza. Yes, mozzarella, salmon and Philadelphia cream cheese. Another no brainer. We dive into it with gusto, finding it something of a revelation. The sweet Philly cheese works great with the salmon to make a pizza offering that’s creamy and indulgent.

We have two slices each and realise it’s a little rich, but for sharing in groups of four it’s an absolute must-order.

We’re also happy with our pasta choice as we scoff away. The ricotta cheese is light, the spinach working as a foil, metallic to taste and adding the right balance to the parcel it’s wrapped in.

Overall, this place is worth a visit, even if it is only for the chocolate pizza.
