The Katara Amphitheatre is easily the most spectacular element of Katara Cultural Village, and a must-visit for any tourist or resident. But the next time you find yourself in the area, we think you should be making a beeline for the almost-as-impressive (albeit slightly smaller) tribute to Greek culture that is Hellas.
Located in Katara’s South Plaza, Hellas first opened its doors in September 2020, joining just a handful of other Greek restaurants in the city at the time. The décor, with its white washed walls, pops of blue and rattan finishings, will go some way to transport you to one of the Greek islands – without quite so many tourists – and the proximity to the sea from the outdoor terrace certainly helps, too.
We find ourselves in a cosy nook at the end of the restaurant, and a quick read through the menu sets our stomachs rumbling. Starting with a bread basket and dips like tzatziki and melitzana is a must, before moving onto more substantial plates like the eggplant rolls and bougiourdi. Cheese lovers will be in their element, while seafood fans will find a lot to love about the calamari or the grilled octopus with Santorinian fava.
For mains, the chicken souvlaki, served on the skewer, is juicy and flavourful, while vegetarians will enjoy the hearty mushroom giouvetsi. If you’re coming here for gyros (of course you are), make sure you pay a visit on Sundays or Mondays, as you sadly won’t be able to order it during the rest of the week.
For an authentic dessert, opt for the galaktoboureko, which is served covered in syrup and with a scoop of ice cream. Despite the mega feast we have just embarked upon, we still find ourselves fighting over the final few bites.
On our latest visit, we didn’t struggle to get a seat, but now that the weather is cooling down we imagine the outdoor seats will be a hot piece of real estate. Service is quick and friendly, and staff are all too willing to recommend dishes (and to forgive us for our terrible pronunciation).
This spot is committed to authenticity and tasty plates, which will serve it well after a slate of new Greek restaurants opening across the city.
A taste of Greek in Katara? It can only be Hellas.
