Granted, not many places serve the Asian delicacy shabu shabu in Doha, but from those that do, we’ve found our favourite. The shabu shabu (or do-it-yourself Chinese-Japanese hotpot) served at Hwang is not totally DIY. The modern age of unfaltering restaurant service has spoiled us just a bit and the idea of a professional making the perfect hotpot sounds like a winning one.
The server lets our chicken broth boil in a big steel vessel (you can choose chicken, beef or seafood broth) and slowly adds your choice of vegetables first. Priced at an average of QR35 each, you can choose several vegetables such as bokchoy, Chinese cabbage, tofu, shitake mushrooms and broccoli to go in. When the broth starts boiling, your choice of meat, chicken or seafood is added in. The Angus here has an exceptionally clean, beefy flavour, which we love. Choose your noodles (we recommend udon) and place it all in your bowl. A selection of sauces, from ponzu and creamy miso to spicy vinegar and sweet chilli, is kept at your table. Tough choice indeed. The broth is ready after a few minutes and what’s waiting is the best shabu shabu in town. An intensely flavourful broth (thanks to these sauces), tender Angus and as many greens as you want are all combined to create our very deserving dish of the month.
Pro tip: Don’t miss out on trying a glass of the famous Hwang passion. It’s just super.
