The best budget restaurants in Doha
The best budget restaurants in Doha Image #2

Forget fancy five-star fare, we’ve found some great little gems offering delicious food for a very reasonable price tag. Don’t expect the obvious choices here, however, because we’ve searched far and wide for the relatively unheard of spots…

Bharath (Vasanth Bhavan)

Cuisine: North and South Indian, vegetarian
Average price for two: QR30-QR50
Buried in a corner of a commercial shopping complex, just off B Ring Road is this cosy and popular Indian restaurant that is often brimming with natives. You have options from the north and south of India but tell the servers what you’re after and they’ll recommend something fabulous. What we love most about this place is that you don’t leave feeling inordinately full and as though your pores are leaking ghee – it’s good, wholesome Indian grub that’s delicious, authentic and totally unpretentious. Try the masala dosa, you won’t regret it.
Open daily 7am-3pm, 6pm-11pm. B Ring Road, near Jaidah flyover (4443 2211).

Sara Restaurant

Cuisine: Pakistani
Average price for two: QR50-QR60
The wonderfully strange signage in this place is worth going for alone and it’s certainly off the beaten track but what’s more impressive are the flavoursome meat curries, biryanis, soft naans and the opportunity to try more unusual options like lamb brains (are you brave enough?) and lots of mutton dishes. Add to that friendly staff and you have all the makings of a great budget dine out.
Open daily 8.30am-11.30pm. Al Farabi Street, Freej bin Abdul Aziz (4442 7024).

Cuisine: Egyptian and seafood
Average price for two: QR90-QR100
As you walk in the open gates there’s no mistaking this is an Egyptian restaurant with a couple of pharaoh statues guarding the way. We love the ambience – you can imagine this kind of place in the middle of Cairo – and the food is authentic. As you walk in, there is a small fresh fish selection or an a la carte menu with a mix of seafood, Egyptian and international. The service won’t be winning any awards but for the experience, food and prices we’ll get over it.
Open daily 11am-midnight. Sulaiman bin Wahb Street, Al Sadd (4427 7770).

Far East

Cuisine: Thai, Chinese, Japanese, European
Average price for two: QR60-QR70
The décor in this place is so quaint you can’t help but love it. Located just past TV Roundabout, Far East offers an eclectic mix of cuisines – Thai, Chinese, Japanese and even European – but they’re best known for their Thai dishes. The Thai red curry is lovely and light yet packs a flavoursome punch, and you can enjoy these in the main seating area or off to the side in a private booth of your own.
Open daily 11.30am-3.30pm, 5pm-midnight. Al Markhiya Street (4487 1313).

Burger Plus

Cuisine: International, fast food, sandwiches
Average price for two: QR20-QR40
Firstly, Burger Plus is open 24 hours and offers free home delivery. Secondly, there are 170 items on the menu such as club sandwiches, burgers, chicken, fresh juices, a section for kids and a host of Chinese meals. Lastly, everything we’ve had there is good and it’s cheap as chips. What more do you want?
Open daily 24 hours. Near Marmara Istanbul, Freej Kulaib (4487 3020).

Al Fakhra Samoosa

Cuisine: Samboosas
Average price for two: QR4-QR12
Who can resist a little hole in the wall in Al Markhiya that only sells samboosas? Well, we certainly can’t. Get a little deep-fried taste of heaven for next to nothing and believe us, they’re worth throwing caution to the wind for. You can choose from chicken, mutton, potato, cheese and/or vegetable and get six with every portion. They’re all fab but the cheese samosas are something else entirely.
Al Markhiya, next to Yellow Cab Pizza.

Spicy Pickle

Cuisine: Café fare
Average price for two: QR60-QR70
Spicy Pickle, a fast casual café, has just opened its doors at The Gate Mall in West Bay and offers a range of yummy treats for a very reasonable price. The menu offers dishes like flatbread pizzas, salads, wraps and sandwiches, as well as cookies and fancy crisps, plus the option to takeaway lunch boxes or order for delivery. There’s something for everyone from the carnivores to the vegetarians and it’s all served in a cute little spot with indoor and outdoor seating.
Open Sat-Thu 7am-10pm; Fri 1pm-10pm. The Gate Mall, West Bay (4407 7118).

Oriental Kitchen

Cuisine: Malaysian and Chinese
Average price for two: QR70-QR80
It’s a tiny place with not much more than ten tables but it’s packed even on a weekday with people of all nationalities but mainly Malaysian or Chinese. Find traditional one-pot and single person meals or order a range of dishes with your friends and dig in. Portions are decent, the flavours are all there and we love the unpretentious, authentic atmosphere complete with the obligatory waving lucky fortune cat!
Open daily 10.30am-3pm, 5.30pm-10pm. Al Khalidiya St, off C Ring Road (3336 3279).

Shawarma and Kunafa Albisana

Cuisine: Shawarmas and kunafa
Average price for two: QR30-QR50
Nestled in the middle of Katara Cultural Village are these two small restaurants, joined together with a spacious outdoor seating area. They serve just beef or chicken shawarmas for your mains and kunafa (a Middle Eastern dessert) for afters, but they’re guaranteed to be delicious. This is gourmet eating on the cheap and it’s not to be missed.
Open Sun, Mon-Thu 3pm-1am; Fri-Sat 1pm-2am. Katara Cultural Village (4408 1200).
