Americas

American Grill
Ease of ordering:
Super easy.
Delivery time: 1/5
Times: Sun-Thu 11am-2am, Fri 1pm-2am
Verdict: When you want a massive burger that will dribble down your front, this is the place to go. With huge, hearty portions and some of the best chilli we’ve ever tasted, it’s a must if you want a burger that bites back.
Get it: 4411 0188

Applebees
Ease of ordering:
Ridiculously easy. These guys are pros.
Delivery time: 1/5
Times: Sun-Thu 11am-2am, Fri 1pm-2am
Verdict: An American chain with simple, easy items, the boneless barbecue wings here are excellent. Applebees will also deliver its beverages, including the frozen juice concoctions. But portions do seem to be smaller when you order than when you eat in.
Get it: 4442 7753 or 4436 0747

Black and White
Ease of ordering:
Easy.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 11am-midnight
Verdict: Set up as a ’50s American diner, it offers exactly what Archie comics defined as ‘classic American’ – burgers, French fries, and sandwiches. These are tastier than the average burger, though, and the garlic mayonnaise a must to add to your order.
Get it: 4444 4585

Bread and Bagels
Ease of ordering:
Simple if you’ve got the menu in front of you.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Sun-Thu 7am-10pm, Fri 9am-10pm
Verdict: Some of the best (and only) bagels in Doha, we’re also really into the pizza versions, and the number of things offered that can be slapped on a bagel. Sandwich based, these are easy to adjust to suit your taste. Be sure to order a side of the wicked potato salad.
Get it: 4411 0041

JG Sandwich Cellar
Ease of ordering:
Super ridiculously easy.
Delivery time: 4/5
Times: Sun-Thu 7am-10pm, Fri-Sat 8am-10pm
Verdict: A British café-style restaurant, it’s packed with UK favourites like fish and chips and pies with all manner of fillings, plus hearty sandwiches. It’s also got some of the tastiest French toast we’ve ever had, and with some gentle begging you can even get breakfast foods delivered at night – which pleases us and our maple-syrup-huffing souls.
Get it: 4435 7559

Johnny Rockets
Ease of ordering:
Easy.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 7am-1am
Verdict: American burgers and fries with a ’50s twist, the onion rings are magical wizards from deep-fried Mars.
Get it: 4455 2792

Nando’s
Ease of ordering:
Easy
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 11.30am-1.30pm
Verdict: Tasty chicken that’s easily made healthier (although why you’d want to skip on the fantastic potato wedges we don’t know), it comes in a variety of spice levels. Ask for extra winget sauce to dunk your fries in – you won’t regret it. There is a QR100 minimum order for delivery.
Get it: Al Sadd (4432 2718); Salwa (4435 6756)

Arabic

Al Karawan
Ease of ordering:
Fairly easy.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 7am-1am
Verdict: Arabic food heavy on the Egyptian, the menu is smaller than others, but includes some interesting choices: alas, the day we ordered they didn’t have the pigeon roast available, but we’re deeply committed to the lamb with Egyptian rice.
Get it: 4431 5844 or 4431 5843

Al Majles Al Arabi Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Translator? Anyone?
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 7am-1am
Verdict: A weird mix of international and Middle Eastern food, it’s a good option if you don’t want to have to choose.
Get it: 4444 7417 or 4444 7416

Al Shami Home Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Can be challenging the first time, or if you don’t speak Arabic, but it generally works out in the end.
Delivery time: 4/5
Times: Daily 24 hours
Verdict: Some of the best mezze we’ve ever had, it shows up hot even when ordering big portions for parties, with ample portions of freshly-baked flatbread. The moutabal and mahummrah are some of the best we’ve ever tasted. You can order select dishes or, if catering for a party, just specify a price and the guys fill it with a mix of options.
Get it: 4443 3666

Isfahan Xpress
Ease of ordering:
Challenging. Be prepared to enunciate.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Al Furosiya and Al Wakra daily 11.30am-1.30am; Al Gharafat daily 11.30am-2am; The Mall daily 10.30am-11.30pm
Verdict: Fantastic kebabs done Iranian-style (or so claims the menu) make this worth the struggle to order them. They turn up hot, and the saj bread almost makes up for the plain white rice they are served with. Extra points for not charging us for delivery.
Get it: Al Furosiya (4414 1718 or 3322 8067); Al Gharafa (4486 8811 or 3322 8084); Al Wakra (4477 2726 or 3317 2484); The Mall (4465 3906 or 3363 2717)

Jabal Lebanon Bakery
Ease of ordering:
Slightly challenging, but the menu items are in English, which helps.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 24 hours
Verdict: Nice barbecue, it shows up still hot.
Get it: 4442 1704 or 5533 7574

Marmara Istanbul
Ease of ordering:
Surprisingly easy.
Delivery time: 2/5

Verdict: We like the late-night openings, so almost any time can be shawarma time.
Get it: Al Sadd (4436 5414 or 4436 2947); Bin Omran (4486 3527 or 4486 8395); Aziziyah (4447 4801 or 4447 4802)

Royal Palace of Bukhari
Ease of ordering:
Surprisingly effective, despite the small language barrier.
Delivery Time: 2/5
Times: Daily 11am-12.30am
Verdict: Solid choices, although we’re not sure it always lives up to it’s grandiose name.
Get it: The Mall (4436 0800 or 4436 0801); Al Nasr Street (4436 0802 or 4436 0803).

Takeaway
Ease of ordering:
As easy and as simple as its name, this place even remembers the most difficult-to-find Doha addresses (the ones without street names or decent landmarks), so you don’t have to explain it twice.
Delivery Time: 1/5
Times: Al Sadd daily 24 hours; Airport and Al Rayyan daily 6am-midnight; Muaither daily 6am-1am; Um Salal daily 5.30am-midnight
Verdict: The fatayers are tasty and a nice snack that can easily make a meal, although the many tiny boxes everything comes in always make us feel like we’ve ordered far too much food (we haven’t, they are just generous with the packaging).
Get it: Al Sadd (4442 7776); Al Rayyan (4491 8104); Muaither (4481 8102); Airport (4466 7307); Umm Salal (4492 2009).

Turkey Central
Ease of ordering:
Challenging, unless you’ve got the menu in front of you. However, sometimes language-barrier mistakes result in delicious surprises: some of our favourite dishes were ones we didn’t actually order from this place.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 10am-midnight
Verdict: Tasty and a solid choice, we especially love the bread – either the freshly- baked flat breads or the tomato bread, which is exactly what it sounds like.
Get it: 4443 2927, 4442 3423 or 4441 2435

Chinese

Al Osra Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Easy.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 10.30am-12.20am
Verdict: Decent Chinese dishes that lean more towards the international than the authentic, the menu also has a mix of Indian, Arabic and Western options, just in case one continent isn’t enough.
Get it: 4431 9941 or 4431 9159

Beijing Chinese Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Easy
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 11.30am-3.30pm, 5.30pm-11.30pm

Get it: 4435 8688

Shanghai Garden Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Easy – this one is in City Centre mall, so they are pros.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 11am-11.30pm

Get it: 4493 3188

Indian

Bombay Chowpatty
Ease of ordering:
This was challenging.
Delivery time: 1/5

Get it: 4462 2100

Ease of ordering:
Decent.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Sat-Wed 11.30am-3pm, 5.30pm-midnight; Thu-Fri 11.30-3pm, 5.30pm-1am
Verdict: A massive selection of Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Filipino dishes means there’s a little something for everyone, but we love it for the fantastic Indian food that’s still piping hot one hour later. It’s reliably good, each and every time we order.
Get it: 4465 7711 or 4465 7722

Caravan Bukhara Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Sometimes frustrating, usually easy.
Delivery time: 1/5 (located in the Khalifa International Tennis Complex, it’s a bit remote)
Times: Daily noon-3pm, 6.30pm-midnight
Verdict: Fantastic spicy curries that smack of authenticity, it’s worth the wait.
Get it: 4483 3345 or 4440 9614

Times: South Indian 7am-11am, noon-3pm, 7pm-11.30pm; North Indian 11.30am-3pm, 6.30pm-11pm
Verdict: With two restaurants in one (a South Indian on the ground floor, a North Indian upstairs), you can have your pick of tasty favourites from all over the country. The South Indian option in particular is renowned for outstanding dishes – don’t be fooled by the cheap price point.
Get it: North Indian (4436 5676 or 4436 5686); South Indian (4436 5676 or 4436 5686)

Get it: 4444 1515 or 4442 1642

Royal Tandoor
Ease of ordering:
Surprisingly easy.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily noon-3pm, 7pm-11pm
Verdict: One of the most authentic Indian restaurants in the city, this is the place if you want real curry and dishes prepared in traditional clay ovens. There’s a reason this one is a weekly stop for many people in the city – but be warned, it’s popularity means delivery times increase on weekends!
Get it: 4444 6151

Spices
Ease of ordering:
Easy, and they know the city well.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 7am-10am, noon-3pm, 7pm-11pm
Verdict: It’s all in the name: this place is the stop for something spicy. If you value your tongue or like to ease your way into hot food, ask for medium spicy or less spicy. Either way, get prepared to sweat while you eat (in a good way).
Get it: 4436 5003 or 4436 5009

Tanjore
Ease of ordering:
Challenging if you’re doing it sans menu.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily noon-midnight
Verdict: Solid portion sizes and decent, middle-of-the-road dishes makes this a pleasant choice. Dishes aren’t so spicy they scare off tentative diners, but neither are they so bland they don’t remind you you’re eating Indian.
Get it: 4432 0333

Welcome Dine Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Occasionally challenging, depending on who answers the phone.

Italian

Biella
Ease of ordering:
Sometimes a bit complex, as the chef is constantly changing specials.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 11am-11pm
Verdict: Solid choices all round, with tasty, constantly updated specials, we’re still mainly ordering for their pizza. Thin crust with adult ingredients, it makes us happy.
Get it: City Centre Doha (4493 3838); The Mall (4467 7732); Landmark (4411 0928)

Fabio’s
Ease of ordering:
Super easy.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily noon-midnight, Fri 5pm-midnight
Verdict: Delicious, simple pizza makes this a slightly classier stop than other places, but reasonable prices means it won’t break the bank. The lasagne is cheesily-scrumptious too. Our only quibble is the free delivery
only on orders over QR50: the prices are reasonable enough, we sometimes have to stretch to get there.
Get it: 4416 5641

Francesca
Ease of ordering:
Simple.
Delivery time: 2/5
Times: Daily 10am-11pm
Verdict: It’s all about the pasta, and we’re sort of in love with this place for it. It’s quick and simple, sure, but still tasty – and we’re not just saying that because our hearts belong to anything smothered in cheese either.
Get it: 4465 3906

Yellow Cab
Ease of ordering:
Easy – these guys know their stuff.
Delivery time: 4/5
Times: Daily 11am-11.30pm

Get it: 4488 8916 or 4488 8310

Japanese

Oishi Sushi
Ease of ordering:
Eas.y
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Sat-Thu 1am-11pm, Fri 1pm-11pm
Verdict: Fantastic Japanese staples and yummy sushi make this a hit if you want something more than raw fish. The teppanyaki is to die for. And with fairly reasonable prices, Oishi Sushi is one of the more cheaply-priced Japanese restaurants in Doha.
Get it: 4442 8989

Sushi Minto
Ease of ordering:
Simple.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily noon-3pm, 6pm-11pm
Verdict: Delicious sushi with a vast menu, it’s a great option even if the rolls tend to be slightly small. Delivery is quick, and they even managed not to spill the soy sauce. Check out the Facebook page as well for occasional deals on delivery orders.
Get it: 4467 5577

South-East Asian

Jasmine Thai Restaurant
Ease of ordering:
Simple after a bit of pass-the-phone.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 3pm-midnight
Verdict: Mention this restaurant and regular customers immediately start to drool. Great Thai and even better Chinese, with a focus on Hong Kong dishes, makes this a great option for Asian conniseurs. One quibble: you have to order at least QR250 for delivery. But after the first time, you’ll have no problem reaching that.
Get it: 4443 1601 or 4443 1601

Noodle House
Ease of ordering:
Simple.
Delivery time: 3/5
Times: Daily 11am-11pm

Get it: Pearl-Qatar (4495 3876 ext 2531); City Centre Doha (4411 5063); Landmark Mall (4417 5682).

It’s in the delivery

We’ve had some ludicrous conversations with takeaway staff. Here are some of the silliest things we heard, or were forced to say.

‘What’s your name?’
‘Nyree.’
‘Larry?’
‘No, Nyree – it’s a
girl’s name.’
‘Ok Larry.’

‘What’s your name?’
‘Daisy.’
‘Baby?’
‘No, Daisy’
‘Baby.’
‘[Sigh] Yes, Baby – my name is Baby.’

‘Hello, we ordered food over an hour ago – where is it?’
‘I’m sorry, the driver was in a crash on his motorbike.’
‘Oh, was there any damage?’
‘No, he’s fine, sir.’
‘Actually, I was referring
to my burger.’

Worth leaving the house

They might not deliver, but these takeaway spots make us more than happy to retrieve our food ourselves.

Chowking
A Filipino Chinese favourite, it’s what happens when fast food meets family-style dining. Big portions and reasonable prices aside, we’re addicted to halo halo, a ice-based desert topped with everything from gelato, fruit, flan and the kitchen sink that’s the perfect thing on a hot Doha day. It’s also practically self-generating, as the ice melts, refilling the bowl as you eat it. And since it technically qualifies as fast food, you can just turn up and get your food quickly.
Al Sadd Street (4431 4411), open daily 10am-1am.

Korean Garden Restaurant
Seriously authentic Korean fare, it might seem simple and rustic (if we’re being polite), but the food is tasty and seems exotic in a city where exotic is a way of life. Basic dishes done perfectly make this the ideal stop if you want to try another part of Asia. Ordering in advance is recommended.
C Ring, just before Ramada Junction (4442 1853), Sat-Thu 11.30am-11.30pm, Fri noon-11.30pm.

Layali
Solid Lebanese and Arabic food that’s a firm favorite amongst Doha’s Lebanese and Moroccan expats. Big, meaty kebabs and fantastic Arabic desserts make it a must-stop. The atmosphere inside is pretty, but Layali will also bag up your tasty treats to go. It’s recommended to call ahead – this spot can get busy.
Salwa Road (4431 0005 or 4431 0006), open daily noon-midnight.

Neo
Fantastic sushi and Western dishes, the rolls are huge and give great value for money. Order ahead and get everything bagged when you arrive, complete with more than enough soy sauce and wasabi to see you through the rest of your lifetime. This place is also easy about substitutions – changes and special requests are accepted with a smile.
Salwa Road (4432 2508), open daily noon-4pm, 7pm-midnight.

Rocca
Tucked away down the by the Grand Hyatt pool, this isn’t the typical place you’d expect takeout, but we assure you: the pizza is worth it. Thin and crispy with haute cuisine toppings, they come in their own special Rocca pizza boxes. Plus, they are not as expensive as you would expect from one of the big hotels in Doha. We’d definitely order in advance for this one, though – fine dining, even when relaxed – cannot be rushed.
Grand Hyatt Doha (4448 1270) 10am-midnight.

Thai Snack
This perennial favourite does a brisk trade in takeaways, for good reason: there’s no need to order ahead, even if you just turn up your food is ready almost before you are. If you do order ahead, it will be hot and packed waiting when you get there. The menu is easy to order from as well, as this place tends to stick to numbers instead of names for its dishes, and there is a helpful wall of photos of each dish next to
the cashier – so you don’t even need to pick up a copy of the menu.
Turn right on to Al Nasr Street just before Ramada Junction and look for Thai Massage – Thai Snack (4432 9704) is right next to that, open daily 10.30am-2.30pm, 5pm-11pm.
