CUT by Wolfgang Puck

Doha’s newest celebrity chef-owned spot impresses with its food and vibe

Time Out Says

One of America’s culinary A-listers just opened his signature steakhouse in Qatar and we’re more than thrilled, of course. CUT by Wolfgang Puck is located in the glorious Mondrian and is spectacular right from the dramatic entrance around the floating spiral staircase (that leads to nowhere) to the creatively larger-than-expected design elements inside.

We arrive for a late lunch and choose the Louis cocktail with king crab, Gulf shrimp and lobster to start with. It’s light and refreshing and the spicy tomato horseradish flavours work well with the seafood, although the quantity is a lot less than we’d anticipated.

Next up, we try the pizza with wild mushrooms, goats’ cheese and pencil asparagus. And sadly we’re disappointed. The mushrooms lack flavour and we’re also really missing some truffle oil here, something that could have made this otherwise bland pizza work. We have much better luck with the ricotta gnocchi with wagyu beef bolognaise. It’s a bit too soft but the taste is excellent and the gnocchi is clearly very fresh, too.

The server recommends the steak frites and this turns out to be the highlight. The USDA prime New York sirloin is perfectly seasoned and comes with a béarnaise sauce made in house. We are beyond impressed with the quality and the flavour.
For the price, all the savoury portions are far too small. But the service is top-notch and is probably the main reason we’d become regulars here.

Contrary to the savoury portions, the dessert is massive and perfect for two people. So really, tucking into a homely crumble with comice pears and blackberries and slowly sipping on jasmine tea while watching Doha’s skies turn purple is possibly the most ideal way to spend a relaxed Saturday afternoon.

The bottom line
Excellent food but in too-small portions, served in an elegant venue.
