We go to the Al Shaqab equestrian complex (incredibly impressive), in the knowledge someone will be able to guide us to Chef’s Garden, which we know to be somewhere nearby in Qatar Foundation. Gate 5 we must go to, we are told. So we drive around a bit and happen to hit Gate 6 (metaphorically speaking). Luckily, this actually happens to be the correct gate, and by fortune we manage to get to where we need to be. We’re happy we found it, or this review could have been non-existent.

When we get in we find very reasonably priced food, very pleasant views, a good menu, decent interior and, after a little research, understand that much of the produce is sourced locally in Qatar. So Chef’s Garden already holds something in our hearts before we’ve even had as much as the bread (which truly is excellent).

That said, we do feel there is a little bit of an identity crisis to this place. This begins before we even enter – Chef’s Garden is also widely known as “The Club.” Which is it, we wonder? We still don’t really know. The bright interior and television screens make us assume it could be cafeteria food, and parts of the menu for lunch do hint towards a quick sandwich for a snack, while other parts suggest fine dining. We’re not exactly sure what to make of it all.

We find out they have a completely separate evening menu, which is very impressive and omits the quick sandwich options. For lunch, there’s a choice of an express lunch for QR95, but we find that ordering individually is actually similar in price. We try the bib royale and take a Tom Yum soup, the latter not actually on the menu but an option they advise. The soup is delectable, the bib royale serviceable, but not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

We follow this up with the lamb burger with halloumi and pesto, along with truffle chips, and the grilled grouper. Both are decent, the lamb the highlight of the two as the grouper, accompanied with almond and cranberry quinoa, is slightly overdone. The chips are moreish with the lamb, never good for the waistline. Our sides also steal the show – the garlic asparagus and crispy cauliflower both seasoned and cooked to perfection. This is a theme throughout the meal – the vegetables take the limelight.

Onto dessert, and one of us fancies the beetroot and chocolate cake. The beetroot adds a little colour and an ideal texture, while the other chooses a tropical merveilleux. The jasmine Chantilly cream adds an extra surprise to the dish, but the fruit itself is a little disappointing.

The chefs at Chef’s Garden clearly take pride in the menu, offering something for everyone, and the view of the garden (better still if sat outside) and the surprisingly detailed and reasonably priced menu makes it well worth a visit again, especially now we know where to find it.
