Awani has a certain charm that you can immediately feel when you enter the restaurant. The décor is rather unique for a Lebanese restaurant. It’s colourful and contemporary but still manages to retain some Arabesque undertones.

The ceilings are covered in square boxes with crisscross threads in many different colours. The restaurant upholstery is dominated by shades of powder blue and soft orange giving the entire place a vibrant but relaxing vibe.

The hummus bekmaz is a spicy variant of the Levantine classic and comes with a pool of olive oil in the middle. It’s truly tangy and comes with soft, fresh bread.

We’re slightly sceptical about ordering a beef shawarma for mains, but the host insists it is excellent. We decide to take the risk.

The fukhara lahm is a really warm and comforting dish. The meat is perfectly tender and cooked in wonderfully aromatic spices. The almond-crusted halloumi is expectedly salty and the crust looks burnt. But the combination of textures work well together, there is a nice bite from the almond and the chewy halloumi completes the experience.

The shawarma comes on a dangling skewer and is quite fun to look at. There’s a strong cardamom odour which is really overpowering and we’re slightly worried it will ruin the meaty flavours but we’re wrong. The beef is cooked perfectly and the cardamom only enhances the flavours. There’s a tasty tahini sauce for dipping. This dish is an easy winner. Awani’s fun take on Lebanese classics is very refreshing.
