Fantastic Moroccan food with a setting to match

Time Out Says

The setting at Argan manages to achieve a rare balance of traditional Arabesque décor and contemporary design that’s missing from so many Middle Eastern spots. Tables surround a central majlis, full of brightly hued cushions and light fixtures are minimal silver orbs covered in intricate patterns.

The food doesn’t have such a modern twist, rather everything about it feels authentic and homely. The lamb tajine with prunes and apricots is sweet and syrupy, but sesame seeds, egg and almonds balance it out nicely, and the lamb shank falls apart in the mouth. Our only complaint is that it doesn’t come with a portion of cous cous to mop up the sauce.

The quality of meat in the mixed grill is of the same high standard. You probably won’t need a starter (portions here are huge), but the salads are lovely, light and ideal for sharing – the carrot charmoula salad, in particular. The harira soup is also a standout; fresh, comforting and aromatic.

Retire to the majlis at the end of the meal to sink into soft cushions and relax while sipping on Moroccan mint tea and nibbling baklava.

The bottom line
Huge portions of simple, homely Morrocan food in a tasteful, ornate Arabesque setting.
