Ard Canaan

Both food and setting live up to the hype at this popular Palestinian restaurant

Time Out Says

Ard Canaan is packed for the Friday lunchtime rush in Katara. So much so that they are almost unable to find us a table. For what is a relatively new opening, this Palestinian restaurant is obviously making waves with the local community, and it’s easy to see why.

The entrance is a combination of roughly hewn stone and low-lying ceilings of brightly painted, carved wood. The main dining room is concealed, so when we emerge from under some small archways into the cavernous space we are surprised by its size. Full of natural light and filled with huge stone columns, a fountain, stained glass windows, colourful ceramic tiles and dramatic chandeliers, the space feels very grand, while the winding alleyways of Katara that are visible through the windows equally make it seem as though you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem in a bustling souq.

The huge menu covers everything from classic mezze (which, at around QR25 per item, or more, is on the pricey side) to shish taouk. But despite the high prices we are, admittedly, blown away by the sublimely creamy hummus (made with basil) and the sharp, garlicky courgette moutabal. The tabbouleh, too – ubiquitous to Doha but a notoriously tricky salad to get right – is fresh, lemony and standout. But what you should really visit for are the signature dishes.

Much of what’s on the menu you’ll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in the city (and not to such high a standard as this, anyway).

The lamb in the mansaf is fall-off-the-bone tender, and the yoghurt sauce has just the right creamy-sour balance.

The chicken musakhan with taboon bread is just as good, with juicy chicken smothered in fragrant spices and caramelised onions on top of pillowy bread. Both of these dishes are huge, so order them to share with a selection of mezze, and finish the meal with a cup of thick Turkish coffee. A true Middle Eastern experience.

The bottom line
For a taste of authentic Palestinian dishes, it doesn’t get much better.
