Sign up for a sushi masterclass with chef Morimoto

Ditch all your other Saturday plans for an exclusive afternoon with a celebrity chef. The popular chef Morimoto will be in town and not only can you dine with him, you can also learn to make sushi from the master himself.

This Saturday February 1, head over to Morimoto in Mondrian Doha for an incredible experience involving some meticulous preparation of one of our favourite Japanese dishes.

Chef Morimoto is hosting a masterclass from noon and will teach all those who sign up how to prepare and roll sushi.

The masterclass will be followed by a special lunch featuring a set menu.

The experience will last until 5pm and costs QR550 per person (yes, you can also eat the sushi you prepare).

And while you’re booking a spot at the masterclass, chef Morimoto has shared a little bit of his expertise to get you in the sushi-making spirit.

How to create the perfect sushi
“Ensure you buy the best and highest quality ingredients. It’s not only about fresh fish, it’s also about the nori sheets and short-grain Japanese rice.”

“Make great sushi rice by seasoning it with a mixture of rice vinegars, sugar and salt, and then carefully separate and fluff the grains.”

“Forming the sushi requires a bamboo sushi mat and practice. Don’t get discouraged if your sushi looks messy the first time. As with anything, is just takes practice.”

What to avoid
“Do not mix wasabi into your soy sauce. The perfect amount of wasabi is already added into your sushi.”

“Eat your sushi in one bite to enjoy the harmony of flavours. Each piece of sushi is designed to be a balance of flavours and ingredients in one perfect bite.”

“When eating nigiri, dip it in your soy sauce fish side down, otherwise the rice may fall apart.”

Adhering to the above steps will also ensure you don’t embarrass yourself too much at the upcoming masterclass on February 1.

But that’s not the only bonus – you’ll have lifetime bragging rights, too. You just learned to make sushi from chef Morimoto, after all.

We’ll be there, dipping our nigiris like pros.
QR550 (per person, including lunch). Feb 1, noon-5pm. Morimoto, Mondrian Doha, West Bay Lagoon (4045 5999).
