Reach for the sky

Or just chill under it, at a sky-high lounge or rooftop bar. Here are the best of the lot in Doha

Reach for the sky

Mix Bar
This isn’t a sky-high bar, but we love the view here for entirely different reasons. It’s not dazzling, scenic beauty we’re talking about. It’s a peek into real city life and a chance to be slap-bang in the middle of the buzz – what we love for a change sometimes. The massive terrace is perfect to just walk around, chill and have a good conversation. When you’re done, obviously get back in to have the ramen burger. You’d be crackers not to.
Westin Doha Hotel & Spa (4492 1555).

There is something extraordinary about the view here. Look on the left to see new Doha, West Bay’s towering skyscrapers all lit up at night and beaming beautiful, multicoloured rays of light onto the sea. And look to your right to see old Doha, also lit up, but majestically different to the other side. If you’re into this whole view thing, Pure is definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss. The bar really needs to work on its seating, though. In fact, call it a cheeky FYI, but we’d rather stand than sit here. The beverages are all reasonably priced, though.
Doubletree by Hilton (4034 3333).

Taking after the famous Skybar in the Mondrian LA hotel, that celeb-magnet where all the cool kids hang out (when we were last there we partied with Cameron Diaz and Ryan Reynolds, just saying), Rise in Doha is located on the 27th floor of the brand-new Mondrian Hotel in Doha. And it offers some genuinely breathtaking views of the Pearl-Qatar, Lusail City and West Bay. Good enough. The hand-painted glass dome is also inspired by the colours of the sky, so really, it makes perfect sense to take in the heart and soul of Doha from here. We also have an inkling that this lounge might be the new popular hotspot to beat. Have you been yet? If not, get yourself on down there, pronto.
Mondrian Doha, West Bay Lagoon (4045 5555).

Located on the 55th floor (56th is the mezzanine level where you can shake a leg later), this high-altitude spot is well worth the climb. This is a fun place to hang with your gal pals (especially on ladies’ nights when free designer bags can be won) or with all your friends for some sundowners and to appreciate the city at night. The seating here isn’t the most comfortable and we recommend you skip the bites (apart from the free nuts, which are actually fantastic). But we want to direct your full attention to the view from here. It’s ace.
Intercontinental Doha The City, West Bay Lagoon (4015 8888).

Shanghai Club
It’s on the 43rd and 44th floor, but what we really love about this place is how high the ceiling is. The space looks drastically different during the day, compared to at night, but if you’re okay with the pink and green lights that dominate the ambience, and a couple of dragons there and thereabouts, of course, the view from here is just brilliant. In fact, it’s so good it almost feels like something out of a movie. We implore you to try the excellent bites, and would very much recommend this as a place for date night. But don’t say we didn’t warn you about the long waiting times. Because, you know, there are long waiting times. So there.
Shangri-La Hotel (4429 5295).

Zengo Lounge
Think black, classy leather seating, avian-themed interiors, wide-ranging drinks and some culinary masterpieces. Zengo Lounge is located on the 62nd floor of the Kempinski so you can lose yourself in the truly spectacular view from Doha’s highest lounge while sipping on mixed beverages and tasty Asian bites. Come here for a couple of drinks before heading on down to Zengo on level 61 for dinner. You won’t regret that you did.
