Qatar National Day is the biggest event of the year, and as soon as the day ends we get excited for the next one.
And now the National Day Organizing Committee has revealed this year’s slogan – Ancestral meadows: A matter of trust.
The slogan is a reference to a poem by Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani, the founder of Qatar.
The poem excerpt referenced reads: “Oh, how many caravans have passed by/
Leaving behind vestiges of the fluctuations of the time/
Abodes our sights are accustomed to as the seasons slip by/
Our meadows ornamented with herbs.”
According to the organising committee, the slogan reflects the “close-knit relationship” Qataris have with their environment, particularly with the sea, with pearl diving, and the desert.
Writing about the slogan on Instagram, the committee said, “[Qataris] were brought up on the land that shaped their characteristics, and they explored and coexisted with nature, the colours of its soil and sea and its seasonal changes, to the extent that the environment has become part and parcel of their existence and a major source of influence in the building of their personality and identity.”
Qatar National Day is celebrated on December 18 every year, and marks the day that Qatar’s founder succeeded his father in 1878.
It was initially marked on September 3 – the day Qatar gained independence from the UK in 1971 – but changed to December 18 in 2007.
National Day celebrations traditionally sees a parade take place along the Corniche, although last year the event was closed to the public as part of coronavirus restrictions.
There is also a fireworks show along the Corniche, and last year Katara Cultural Village also hosted a display on December 17.
It is unclear what format this year’s celebrations will take, but we will be keeping you up to date in our news section.
