Everything you need to know about the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out in Qatar

General population of Qatar to get coronavirus vaccine from August

The vaccination campaign will be run in four phases

The general population of Qatar will get the coronavirus vaccine from August, the Ministry of Public Health has revealed.

Qatar’s vaccination campaign will be run in four phases, ensuring that those most at risk of severe complications are protected first.

The first phase, which will run until March 31, will see healthcare personnel who are working with COVID-19 patients, first responders and other key personnel, those with severe health conditions, everyone above the age of 50, and 50 percent of teachers vaccinated.

Then, from April 1 until June 30, healthcare personnel not included in the first phase, workers in industries including food, housekeeping, hairdressing and transportation, all remaining teachers, those aged 40 and above, and those with moderate health conditions, will receive their jabs.

The third stage, scheduled for June 1 to July 31, will see workers in essential industries not covered in the previous stages vaccinated. Provided the COVID-19 vaccine is approved for use in children by this time, kids will also be given their doses.

Finally, from August 1 until October 31, vaccination will be open to all residents and citizens in Qatar who were not previously vaccinated.

Dr Hamad Al Romaihi, the director of health protection and communicable diseases at MoPH, announced the vaccination phases at a press conference.

Qatar’s vaccine roll-out began in late December, and has seen 50,000 people vaccinated so far.

Currently, only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is being distributed, but a shipment of Moderna doses is set to arrive within the next ten days.
