The logistics of taking one of Broadway’s most successful shows on tour are mindboggling. In tow are sixty people, hundreds of costumes and thousands of props needing to be neatly packed together like the parts of an enormous Swiss army knife.
Looking relaxed and remarkably un-creased on a tour which has already taken in Lebanon and Taipei, Briana Rapa, who plays Belle in Disney’s Beauty and The Beast stage musical, promises “all the songs you know and love and then some”.
For those of you unfamiliar with the 1991 Academy Award winning animated feature film, or its Broadway musical incarnation (which ran for 13 years, making it the longest-running and highest-grossing Broadway show of all time), Beauty and The Beast features some of the catchiest numbers. Songs like Be Our Guest make an appearance and, with music by Alan Menken (Aladdin; Tangled) and lyrics by Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid) and Tim Rice (The Lion King), the punchy tunes are guaranteed to lodge in the back of your consciousness, resurfacing at idle moments for weeks after you have seen the show.
It’s a classic story which follows Belle, a young woman who meets the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell. The only way to break the curse is if the Beast can learn to love and be loved in return.
Designed as an extravaganza for children of all ages, Mark Beyer (the Beast) is confident of “a feast for the eyes”. We’re ready. Are you?
