No other regular meal deals in Doha offer better value for money than business and express lunches. In many of the city’s venues, the two- or three-course lunch offers top quality food, efficient and professional service, and they guarantee you’ll be back at your desk within the hour. Following a month’s break, our favourite spots have refreshed and revamped so now’s the time to explore the city’s lunch circuit. Just follow our advice and you can’t go wrong in impressing clients and cravings.
Market by Jean Georges This speedy business lunch is busy either winning the main title or at least Highly Commended prize each year in our Time Out Doha Restaurant Awards because it’s just that good. The service is friendly yet efficient, the ambience is cosmopolitan and the food is top notch. The menu is updated every few months but customers’ favourites remain such as the hearty tomato soup or the tender slowly cooked salmon with truffle sauce. It’s a three course offering but you do have the option to take home their notable cookie bag and the meal sizes aren’t overwhelming so you won’t be going back to the office with a bloated tummy and sleepy head. QR95. Served Sat-Thu, noon-4pm. W Doha Hotel & Residences, West Bay (4453 5135).
La Varenne This popular French brasserie made its debut on the nominees list for ‘Best Business Lunch’ this year at the Time Out Doha Restaurant Awards and went home with the top prize for good reason. Sure, being located right in the heart of the business district and an office tower helps but the friendly yet professional team also offers a fabulous array of lunchtime specials that change weekly. You can choose either two or three courses from a set menu, which also gives you the option to handpick a selection from the dedicated hors d’oeuvres and dessert trolleys (no waiting around for plates to come from the kitchen). The portions are perfect for a lunch so two courses is ideal but we don’t recommend skipping the desserts. You’ll see why as soon as you set eyes on that creeking trolley. QR85 or QR95. Served Sat-Thu, noon-3pm. 28th floor, Tornado Tower, West Bay (4499 0680).
Aroma Aroma is distinctly contemporary European in both its décor and food offerings, with a well-drilled team of Kempinski chefs to back it up. The three-course business lunch is decadent or healthy, depending on what you’re looking for. There’s the ultimate Middle Eastern indulgence experience to be had in a gourmet camel burger but it also offers a more calorie-conscious starter, main and dessert (they also list the calorie content on the menu in case you’re skeptical). It’s the perfect bridge for colleagues with differing food sensibilities but discerning taste buds. Plus, it changes the menu with the seasons so you’ll never get bored of trying all the options. QR90. Served Sat-Thu, noon-3pm. Kempinski Residences & Suites, West Bay (4405 3325).
Yum Yum This little five-star gem in the heart of old Doha is a must-visit on the business lunch circuit. Yum Yum offers top class European cuisine in a contemporary setting. It’s located in K108 Boutique Hotel, which gives 100 percent of its profits to charity. So you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging here. The lunch menu changes regularly to fuel your enthusiasm to come back and try what’s new. And trust us, you’ll want to. Each and every time, the quality is spot on and the presentation is beautiful. QR89. Served Sun-Thu, 12.30pm-3pm. K108 Boutique Hotel, Al Ghanim (4433 3033).
Spice Market What we love most about lunching in Spice Market is the unique option of choosing between the bento box offering or an all-out sushi lunch. While the idea of a bento box conjures up images of small portions of various dishes such as miso soup and tempura, this is a more modern take on the concept. You choose from several options for a soup, salad, main and dessert and then it all comes at once; delicious, tempting and certainly filling. Meanwhile, you can opt to choose from a dedicated sushi menu and pick two rolls, one sushi, one sashimi and a dessert. Enjoy it all in this contemporary Asian-inspired venue, preferably by the window, and you won’t be disappointed. QR95 (bento box) or QR140 (sushi lunch). Served Sat-Thu, noon-4pm. W Doha Hotel & Residences, West Bay (4453 5135).
The Anvil Rooms Yet another Time Out Doha Restaurant Awards 2014 winner (‘Best Steakhouse’) is The Anvil Rooms, a modern take on the elegant steakhouse where not a single detail has been left to chance (even the bread baskets have been forged by a carefully selected English blacksmith). A meal here is usually on the expensive side (yet worth it) but for lunch they offer a steal of a deal. Choose a signature steak, a side, a sauce and a soft drink all for QR149. Once you’ve tasted the quality of the prime cuts, you’ll be hooked. But non-meat eaters don’t despair because this is one carvery that doesn’t forget you. Just request the dedicated a la carte vegetarian menu and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. QR149. Served daily, noon-3pm. 28th floor, Tornado Tower, West Bay (4499 0685).
Cucina Have a hankering for Italian this lunch time but don’t want to end up in a carb coma afterwards? Then we recommend Cucina at Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel. The venue is cavernous but rustic Italian with an open kitchen and range of seating options. You can pick an entrée, main and dessert that feature classics from the homeland, or choose the express deal where you can pick any one of Cucina’s pizzas or pastas along with a side dish and one soft drink for just QR45. It’s a bargain and we particularly like that this place has light Italian dishes down to a tee. QR85 (business lunch). Served Sun-Thu, noon-3pm. QR45 (pizza and pasta express). Served daily noon-6pm. West End of Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel, West Bay (4419 6100).
The Cellar For a taste of the Med look no further than The Cellar, a lively restaurant at the Oryx Rotana that serves up a mean selection of tapas and Spanish favourites. For its lunch X’Press offering you can choose from five starters, four main courses and four desserts of the day which are perfectly portioned and cater to every taste – from vegetarian to fish and meat lovers. Now, carnivorous types can also upgrade the lunch to include sirloin or tenderloin at an extra charge. QR89. Served daily noon-4pm. Oryx Rotana, Umm Ghuwaylina (4402 3454).
