The two multi-purpose treatment rooms here are beautifully designed with spacious shower rooms, coolly-lit massage rooms, Jacuzzi, sauna and a stunning hammam. The calming instrumental music is played at a soft level, candles light certain pathways, and the robes provided are extra-plush. Because one has free reign over the entire treatment room, it is easy to relax and unwind.

Spa Journey for Him (165 minutes, QR1,175)
The promise: The journey begins in a Jacuzzi to relax and a sauna to open the pores. Then a Moroccan hammam cleanses the skin with steam, black olive soap, exfoliation and a body mask of rhassoul mineral clay. This is followed by a sports massage, and finishes up with the Elemis Facial for Him for restoration of skin balance to heal and repair congested skin.
Verdict: My treatment was called a spa journey, and a journey it was. I was most impressed that the same therapist stayed with me from hammam to massage to facial; and he was equally skillful in all three. The hammam is especially noteworthy – it is beautifully appointed and well-maintained – and there’s also a great sense of privacy, as I had an entire area to enjoy all to myself. The facility also caters to couples and I can see it becoming very popular.

Jaula means ‘journey’ in Arabic and the spa offers a sensory voyage through luxury Arabia in its 12 treatment rooms and the VIP room that can be used for couples and comes complete with a Jacuzzi. The spa also runs a fitness centre, the pools and beach areas at Grand Hyatt, and offers a range of fitness classes for the active among us. Their spa and salon therapies range from body to face, hair to nails and everything in between.

Calm Mind Massage (60 minutes, QR600)
The promise: Long therapeutic strokes lull the mind into a state of tranquillity while restoring circulation and soothing muscles.
Verdict: The VIP Spa room really has the ‘wow’ factor and is set upon different levels. This is where I enjoyed my Calm Mind Massage, which is designed for relaxing and this room provides the right ambience.
All areas we discussed on my body were given special treatment and any knots kneaded out. Towards the end of the massage, when I was in a state of semi-awake bliss, I was also given a head massage.
A benefit of having a treatment in the VIP suite means an additional hour in the Jacuzzi. It’s fine for a solo treatment but a must for a romantic spa treatment especially with the other half, with candlelight, soft music and sounds of the water overlapping the Jacuzzi.

Hair and make-up (QR1,000)
The promise: Habibs Hair & Beauty Salon’s hair and make-up artist, Monique Lagnerius, has a very impressive portfolio. She has done up celebrities, models, brides and many more. She has also worked all over the world. Thus her experience made me feel comfortable to trust her with my hair and make-up. It is recommended to allocate about two hours. We started by first showing Monique my dress and discussing with her the type of look that I wish to achieve. I opted for a glamorous yet subtle red carpet look to suit my colourful couture evening dress for the night.
Verdict: Monique achieved well the look I wanted through a combination of face contouring, a dash of sparkles on my eye make-up with subtle fake lashes and a curled hair-do for a classic look.

Sports Massage for him (60 minutes, QR795 / 90 minutes, QR975) *Father’s day special: 90 minutes, QR880
The promise: This massage is designed to improve flexibility and decrease tension. It’s customised for your needs, uses a set of oils you get to choose for yourself and the masseuse employs a strong touch throughout.
The verdict: There are times when this massage hurts but it’s the kind of pain a sportsman likes. You can feel the benefit and know it’s good for you, but the masseuse will check in to see if the pressure is right for you. The experience is pleasant; nice smells emanate from the room, the music relaxes while hot oil soothes your muscles. What more do you want? If you play sport and find yourself stressed in the office (or at home) then get out and book this massage. I felt like a Premier League footballer when I left. It’s luxurious.

The spa caters to women and men separately. The women’s section consists of five treatment rooms while in the men’s area there are three. There’s a pool, newly renovated gym and the men’s room has a sauna and steam room. They also have beauty services, as well as maternity and slimming treatments, and a brand new hair salon.

Sienna X spray tan (QR350)
The promise: The Sienna X spray tan for fairer skin aims to give you an overall tan without the damaging effects of the sun. There are a few colour charts to choose from, depending on your skin tone, then the beauty technician rubs body butter on knees, elbows and wrists to keep the tan from gathering and creating darker areas. She then sprays you evenly in the tanning booth with an airbrush-like hose. Then removes the nozzle and uses the hose to blow dry air to make sure it dries properly.
The verdict: The effects are instant but the tan developed over time and by that evening it was in full bloom. The smell is pleasant (unlike many other tanning products), it was evenly applied and looked beautifully natural and summer ready. I will definitely go back.

The staff are highly trained, professional and, most importantly, they’re knowledgeable and love what they do.

LVL Lashes (60 minutes, QR250)
The promise: LVL means Length, Volume and Lift. As the name states, it’s meant to curl your lashes to lengthen, adding volume and lifting them without using lash extensions and it’s meant to last on average up to six weeks. The treatment uses silicon shields and lifting gel, followed by a neutraliser and an eyelash tint. There are a few aftercare tips and the LVL serum (QR115) to use daily.
The verdict: It is an excellent alternative to fake lashes and daily use of mascara. While I was initially skeptical of the LVL post-care serum, it actually works and my lashes were looking luscious for weeks afterwards.
The treatment is available in Salwa Road and West Bay Lagoon branches.

The Refinery Essential Facial for men (60 minutes, QR600)
The promise: This facial comes as part of a new series of treatments using products from Refinery, the eminent men’s grooming salon from London. The line of skincare is centred on all-natural ingredients and essential oils, which feel luxurious during application and leaves the skin glowing. This is designed as an express treatment when time is short but you need to look your best.
The verdict: It’s deeply cleansing and brightening, and left my skin looking clean and luminous. My face was cleansed, scrubbed and masked at first. While the mask was left to do its thing, I was also given a hand and shoulder massage. My pores were opened with hot towels in preparation for extraction. After that, I was massaged with a post-shave balm, given a head massage and finally the treatment ended with moisturisation. I was then free to use the post-spa facilities to unwind. Overall, the treatment was nothing less than 60 minutes of bliss and a complete transformation.

Six Senses Spa
Set in a beautiful yet traditional location, Sharq Village is of an old fishing village, and the spa has been built to reflect just that. Signature Six Senses Oriental Massage for men (50 minutes, QR580)
The promise: It’s a full body massage, which includes a lot of stretching techniques that makes you feel like your body is being re-aligned. The pressure and targeted areas are customised to your requirements.
The verdict: The masseuse asked me before he started about the pressure I would prefer, and opting for ‘hard’, I really felt the true benefit of the treatment. Having a personal trainer three times a week means that my muscles do struggle with a lot of tension, and this treatment could instantly double up as a sports massage. The treatment does stretch the body and gets you feeling back to normal. But be warned: it’s intense and not relaxing. I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a massage in-between a full body and a sports treatment, as it works perfectly.

Jewel in the Crowne (60 minutes, QR350)
The promise: An ultimate, sublime experience to indulge the senses and ensure extreme results. You can choose from a range of ‘Jewels’ but we went for The Diamond – ‘a sparkling, invigorating ritual to revive your senses, awaken your spirit and detox your body’. It starts with a hand and foot scrub that softens the skin, and finishes off with the relaxing massage. Following that, you can use the rest of the spa’s facilities.
Verdict: This is a very good treatment by friendly, attentive staff and if you use all of the facilities after your session it’s incredibly good value for money as well.

Diva Lounge Spa
This female-friendly and reasonably priced spa has four main treatment rooms which are based on the elements – earth, air, wind and fire. They promote a holistic approach to treatments using worldly techniques, and offering massages, body wraps, polishes, facial therapies and even a slimming programme. They also have a spacious dance studio, a dedicated nail lounge and hammam suite. The best thing about this brand is there are three ideally located branches, with one in The Gate Mall so you can combine a bit of retail and beauty therapy.

Healing Hot Stone massage and Thalgodermyl Facial (75 minutes, QR350; 60 minutes, QR350)
The promise: We combined two treatments for a full body result. The healing hot stone massage aims to improve blood circulation and release toxins, resulting in deep muscle relaxation. It also claims to promote overall well-being and inner vitality, as well as decrease menstrual pain, joint aches, tension and headaches. Meanwhile, the Thalgodermyl facial is specially designed for combination, oily and acne-prone skin. It reduces inflammation and controls excess oil to help your skin feel soft and perfectly balanced. It uses ingredients based on mineral-rich algae (which all smell divine) and takes you through a consultation, cleansing, steam, exfoliation, extraction, serum, mask and moisturisation. A relaxing foot massage is also performed as the mask is left on.
Verdict: The hot stone massage really did help my aching muscles. I’d had a really difficult Pilates class the day before and this relaxed my overworked muscles and seemed much less evasive in working out those stubborn knots, plus there’s something quite therapeutic and ‘back to nature’ about being rubbed with hot stones! The facial isn’t meant to be relaxing, and with a stinging exfoliation and extractions it doesn’t claim to be, but it is effective. My greasy zones felt purged and my skin had a long lasting matte finish that lasted for days afterwards.

On top of that, there’s a male and female salon, sun-tanning studio, a health clinic with laser, oxygen and LPG treatments available, a retail boutique and poolside café!

Quick fix Silhouette package (5-6 hours; QR2,000)
The promise: To have you looking totally made over in less than half a day with a Silhouette fitness class, Moroccan hammam, LPG face and body, mani-pedi, hair treatment and make-up application, plus the chance to try on and get a S-dress of your choice, that completely slims you down, for 30 percent off retail price.
The verdict: I felt tighter, leaner and totally light by the time by day was over. My skin was smooth thanks to the hammam, my nails were looking lovely and my hair and make-up were night-out ready. It’s a good boost and a great idea for ladies wanting to look fab for one night. But if you’re looking for something that lasts more than a couple of days then the two-week and one-month packages, which include more treatments and an optional diet plan, are a better option for you.
