Budget festive décor

Al Rawnaq
This, dear readers, is our holiday gift to you. Al Rawnaq is the hidden gem of all hidden gems and it’s unbelievable how good a deal you can grab here. There’s every decorative item, from colourful garlands and candles to gift boxes and mistletoes.
The prices vary but almost everything you want is well within your price range and this is most definitely the spot to shop for all your conventional decorations.

What’s good lighting without a lovely tree to illuminate? And Santa knows how expensive even the tiniest (and not just the prettiest) trees are around here. Carrefour may not have the best selection of decorations, but they do have the most reasonably priced Christmas trees. A 120cm version costs around QR29, and the quality is surprisingly good. The prices go up as the trees grow taller, but you can still find a very decent-sized one for under QR150.

Daiso is currently every festive shopper’s dream. A reasonably priced Japanese retail store with almost everything Christmas-themed sounds like exactly where we want to be a few weekends before the big day. The stuff is incredible and oh-so-adorable. From candles and Santa teddy bears to snow globes and glitter ornaments, Daiso defines budget holiday shopping. And it’s not just décor, you can find homeware, clothing (yes, there’s a Santa suit) and some really funky pieces as well. Just don’t forget to pick up the Santa on a scooter.

Home Centre
You have to be really strategic with your timing when you shop at Home Centre because they almost always have great deals inside the store and the only time you don’t find them is when you actually visit (true story). However, the outlet near Jaidah Flyover, we’ve noticed, pretty much has sales on for most of the year. Yes, even in December. Some of its Christmas decorations are literally at throwaway prices (we got party crackers, with nice gifts inside them, for barely QR20 for six last year). Don’t look for the conventional stuff here, keep an eye out for some exciting tree ornaments (you can find boxes of 100 ornaments for as low as QR30), reasonably priced stars with battery operated LED lights inside them and, of course, those Christmas crackers.

By now, we all know that IKEA isn’t always that budget destination we thought it was. However, with a little skill and lots of patience you can really find some bargain buys in the nooks and crannies of this sprawling shopping spot. Luckily for you, we’ve already done some scouting so just head to the Market Hall to pick up some affordable décor. This year, IKEA has added a lot more stuff to their collection and you’ll be spoiled for choice with their Christmassy stuff. You can find LED light chains for as low as QR15 (and they’re battery operated) and tree-shaped lights from QR35 (for three). Just look out for their Vinter 2017 collection. You’re velcome.
