The Secret Garden

The roof garden at Marsa Malaz Kempinski is a cosy lounge with a lively yet secluded ambience, and it’s the perfect place to commence a top night out in Doha.

After entering through the hotel basement, we pass through a labyrinth of dark corridors laden with intriguing artworks and elevators, before stumbling upon a bright oasis full of light and vegetation. The entrance alone makes The Secret Garden feel shrouded in mystery, and we can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner. The marble floor illuminates the venue and the only thing separating us from the night sky are the hundreds of fairy lights scattered above. Along with the lush green flora surrounding us, the luminance creates a brilliant homely setting. The Pearl and the marina views are just incredible from here.

The space is massive and despite it being a Thursday night and rammed with people, we manage to find a table without booking.

There’s a great choice of beverages available, but expect to pay upwards of QR70 for a mixed drink. If you’re here on a Monday, ladies get two free beverages.

There’s an extensive food menu and we try the sensational kunafa prawns. The tender flavour of the shrimp is complemented by a crispy exterior and a lightly spiced tartare sauce. We also opt for the mini wagyu beef tacos, which offer our palates an altogether different experience. Bite-sized corn shells hold together delicate and perfectly seasoned chunks of meat with some citrus-infused salad.

The music strikes the right balance and manages to keep everyone happy. The DJ mostly sticks to mid-tempo house music tracks from the last decade, which allows us to keep our conversation flowing without having to shout, and encourages others to get up and dance.

There’s a large, fashionable crowd throughout the lounge all evening. But since the venue is spread out over so many different areas, it never feels overly busy or uncomfortable.

At around midnight the bar begins to thin out, as people begin to migrate over to the adjacent club at Illusion for a less low-key place to party.

The Secret Garden is a charming sanctuary. It offers a gorgeously embellished place to relax against a stunning backdrop. It truly is one of Doha’s must visit settings, and is ideal for after work drinks, somewhere to go before hitting a club, or even date night.
