Doha Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021 begins next week

The programme involves more than 70 events

Doha has been named the Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021, and events are set to kick off next week.

Over the course of the year, there are set to be more than 70 activities that will promote Islamic cultural heritage in an interconnected world and inspire the new generations in the Islamic world to enrich the global cultural scene.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports, in cooperation with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and other organisations including Qatar Museums and Katara Cultural Village, will organise the goings on, which are set to begin on Monday March 8.

ICESCO chose Doha to be the capital of culture in 2021 “given its ancient history and legacy, the civilizational components and landmarks in the State of Qatar that reflect the Islamic character, and based on the fact that Doha is considered a venue for dialogue, cultures and openness to civilizations”.

The programme, which is yet to be unveiled by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, aims to attract more tourists by investing in Dohas architectural heritage.

You can keep up to date with all the latest events on the official Doha Capital of Culture in the Islamic World website by clicking here.

The events will be held under the slogan ‘our culture is enlightenment’. Writing about the slogan on the official website, the organisers said, “the Islamic culture has an inherent value that has its uniqueness within the world’s cultures. It is vibrant as long as it is inspired by the eternal Islamic values that brought humanity out of darkness into light and gave man cognition, knowledge and dignity.”
