It’s one thing to have one artistic talent in the family, but having two incredibly talented artists in that same family is a whole other thing. Ahmed Al-Jufairi, a Qatari artist, is pioneering the country’s first-ever mother-son duo art exhibition Perfect Duet until August 27 at W Doha Hotel’s dedicated art space Art29.

Al-Jufairi, a graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University, has curated a show very close to his heart. After successfully headlining more than 12 group exhibitions including four solo shows and a recent international showcase in Paris, Al-Jufairi is now exhibiting his work alongside his mother Hanady Al-Othman.

Al-Othman, a chemistry major, never had the opportunity to express her creativity growing up. There were no universities that focused on art. But despite all restrictions, she continued to paint in private without realising a few masterpieces were created in the mix. Her forte is oil and acrylic painting.

The Perfect Duet exhibition is a result of Al-Jufairi’s longstanding desire to showcase his mother’s talent to the world.

The joint collection is based on Qatar and India’s year of culture with more than 20 installations using different mediums of art such as sculptors, hints of fashion, video footage, digital prints, 3D and oil and acrylic paintings.

Inspiration for Al-Jufairi’s work has been derived first-hand from his travels through many cities within India, taking snippets and images of iconic monuments, forts, colours, sounds and the vibrancy of the country’s landscape.

Al-Othman’s collection of art draws inspiration from festivals in India rather than locations. Her take on Holi (Indian festival of colours) can be seen on canvas through splashes of colours, depicting a different story with each brush stroke.

You can catch this exhibition filled with love and an abundance of talent all this month at the W Doha Hotel on the 29th floor.

You might want to ensure you have a few hours on hand, because that’s how much time you will probably end up spending just admiring the sheer brilliance of this exhibition.
Free. Until Aug 27, 10am-10pm. Art29, W Doha Hotel & Residences (4453 5000).
