Hamad International Airport unveils new falcon statue

Qatar’s national bird will say goodbye to travellers

Planning on saying goodbye to Doha this summer as you head off on holiday? If you’re travelling via Hamad International Airport, there’s now someone else to wave to.

Qatar Museums has just unveiled a new statue of Qatar’s national bird from renowned artist Tom Claassen.

The stunning golden piece, simply named ‘Falcon’, sits on a ledge at HIA.

According to Qatar Museums chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the vivid lines mimic flight routes from Qatar to the rest of the world, as well as the curves of Arabic calligraphy and the folks in fabric of traditional attire.

Claassen also has another piece at the arrivals hall – a series of sculptures of the oryx, which is Qatar’s national animal, in a herd formation.

Elsewhere in the airport, you’ll find a number of pieces, including the iconic Lamp Bear by Urs Fischer, plus works from local and regional artists such as Ali Hassan, Ahmed Al Bahrani and Dia Al Azzawi.
