October has been an important month in women’s history, not least because it marked suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst’s founding of The Women’s Social and Political Union and Oxford University giving women the right to read degrees there. And thanks to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women around the world can make a difference to their own future by getting screened and joining the dialogue on the importance of early detection and treatment.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year. The key to survival is early detection and statistics suggest the survival rate is nearly 100 percent when diagnosed at an early stage.
How can you help? For starters, you can encourage the women in your lives to have a screening (or if you are a woman over 45, have one yourself). You can also be a part of the awareness campaigns and initiatives around the city. Here are a few of them...
InterContinental Doha – The City is organising several activities (especially at its various dining venues) that focus on highlighting the importance of early detection. Try the pink afternoon tea, the extravagant pink Bar Squared Brunch at The Square and pink-themed nights at Strata Restaurant and Lounge.
Prime is serving steak with an exclusive pink peppercorn sauce (which is actually tempting) and Hwang is giving out free pink fortune cookies. Al Jalsa Garden Lounge will serve pink ice cream and their famous Karkade mocktail, too.
