Besides the euphonic charm of brunching at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, we’re thrilled with how relaxed the mood is as soon as we enter – it's exactly what a Saturday brunch should be: laidback, classy and á la carte-style.

The menu features a lot of contemporary and classic British favourites alongside some of Opal’s signature dishes. Based on what we see alone, this is one incredibly promising line up.

The starters are mostly breakfast items, a lazy brunch as it’s called, and they quickly arrive at the table. Everything is executed excellently, unsurprisingly, and it’s hard to pick our favourite. The cured salmon with avocado mousse delivers a powerful whack of summery spice. There’s the simple but flavour-packed egg scramble with ricotta and chives, a classic Spanish omelette with potato and sautéed onion and strong but absolutely delicious devilled eggs with crab. The ever-popular peach and endives salad is one starter that we could happily order over and over again. The honey-roasted almonds thrown in are sweet, crunchy delight, too.

The first dish on the main course menu is a typical Sicilian linguine pasta alla Norma and it’s boosted by the ricotta salata on top. However, we’re surprised when the Opal mini wagyu burgers pale in comparison to everything we’ve tried so far. The patty is too dry and the edges are burnt. The fish and chips are pretty straightforward – good taste but let down with what feels like a whole day’s quota of grease.

The best part of the brunch is the roast. You can have beef, chicken or both. A slice of roast beef is set atop parsnip puree with green beans, peppercorn sauce and a Yorkshire pudding. It’s salty, sweet and, thankfully on a British menu, is the winning dish. The baby chicken is just as good with its butter sauce and over-generous amounts of garlic (which we secretly love). Just be weary of any close conversations you have with your dinner date from this point on, although you might be too busy munching to bother anyhow. It’s that time when we order another portion of the epic peach and endives salad. We’re stuffed, but this salad is too delicious not to order twice.

After a short break, we dig into the super selection of desserts. A traditional Eton mess which we love, a very tangy, but very tasty pineapple carpaccio with passionfruit sorbet (did your drool glans just fire up imagining that?), a lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and some French toast with vanilla ice-cream. For a grand finale, leave the chocolate tart with salted caramel ice cream and (be still our hearts) honeycomb for the end. (Disclaimer – we are big on honeycomb. And by big, we mean we stock a three year's supply of Cadbury’s Crunchie at all times). What’s really delightful about this brunch is that it does not skimp on dessert, like almost every other á la carte brunch in town. The chefs go all out and create some real sugary masterpieces.

There’s no over-the-top presentation or culinary gimmicks and you can truly admire good taste and technique without being distracted. That’s Saturdays sorted for us.
