We’re unsurprising regulars here and what we love about the Four Seasons brunch, to begin with, is the fact that you won’t feel out of place if you aren’t dressed to the nines (but you can if you want to). Food stations sprawl across two restaurants, and the respective outdoor sections. It’s quite a walk, but it offers an excellent opportunity to burn calories between courses. The crowd is spread out between the indoor and outdoor sections and luckily, you’ll not be caught in between three tables of brunchers having a really, really good (read: loud) time. This particular day is more laid-back and quieter than usual, but it’s refreshing, to say the least.

We walk around to get a sense of where to start. English roast dinners compete against bespoke Italian pizzas and pastas, all set against a beautiful backdrop of sun, sand and sea. Satay skewers are being grilled in the breezy outdoors and fresh seafood line the walls of the garden. We particularly enjoy the black pepper crab. The dedicated ceviche station grabs our attention with its incredible variety and delectable tastes (yes, we tried everything). We move on to grab some fresh oysters – we can actually taste the sea and the condiments mixed in give it a wonderful burst of citrus.

The rest of our culinary journey takes us through Arabia, Europe, Asia and Mexico. Those of you forced to wake up at the unreasonable hour of 12.30pm by over-excitable friends, can even pick up a piping hot English breakfast. We love the grilled meats and the dim sum is served straight to our table – perfect for anyone suffering from a second plate slump. Grab some Peking duck pancakes from Elements – you’ll find them readied by the chef. There’s an Oriental section and some sushi, too. A special noodle cam live streamed to an iPad is set up to give you a bird’s eye view of your dish being prepared. The interactiveness continues as we take the opportunity to (unsuccessfully) smash a block of chocolate with a small hammer. The result doesn’t matter, though, we only wish we could resort to this at home, too.

The dessert display is unlike any other in the city. It’s a glorious array of concoctions straight out of Willy Wonka’s wildest dreams (and your dentist’s worst nightmares). We start with the Four Seasons’ signature chocolate shawarma. White and milk chocolate flake off into bite-sized slithers. We almost miss the typical dessert centrepiece, the chocolate fountain. This only means there’s too much to see, and devour. The delicately hand-crafted candied pears with a white chocolate mousse filling are a work of art. An eclectic selection of finger-sized eclairs are almost as good as the golden treasure chest of Arabic sweets glistening in the corner. We’re rather blinded by the multi-coloured kaleidoscope of macarons, which we may or may not have really gone overboard with. As our senses head closer to the brink of overload, we decided to go for one last indulgence – the feather-light pistachio crème brûlées. And the mango and coconut cake. And the Victoria sponge cake. Undoubtedly, dessert is the highlight of this brunch.

The kids can be left under the care of the Gymboree staff in the kids’ section. There’s plenty to do there and they will be occupied. Small touches and the attention to detail make the real difference here. The service is consistent and attentive, the atmosphere is unpretentious and the overall experience is exactly what you need on a Friday. It’s no wonder it’s our Brunch of the Year.
