Shangtastic Brunch at Fuego, Santorini

Shangri-La Doha doesn’t particularly have a strong brunch game, however, for a fairly new hotel in town they are doing quite well. Their brunch is spread across two restaurants – our highly commended steakhouse Fuego and newly opened Greek casual diner Santorini. There’s also an additional room – for desserts (yes, we are just as excited).

While Fuego is brighter and cosier with lots of light coming in through large windows and live music from two very talented musicians, Santorini has a more chilled vibe with a deejay (who is also a chef, wearing his uniform) spinning some tunes. That said,
we aren't too keen on sitting at Santorini as it's a bit too laidback for our liking.

There is an a la carte menu for the meats and the seafood, which is served to your table, and a selection of dishes that you can browse while walking around. The brunch is characterised by several hits and misses. What we love is the meat selection that’s served to your table, with some really impressive cuts. The breaded and fried Argentine Milanese stands out as do the lamb chops that are really succulent with a nice, smoky flavour. Meat lovers will really enjoy the unlimited and tasty cuts at this buffet. The steak tartare is another hit – we can tell the meat is of a really high quality, and it has its own little station. The lobster thermidor is perfectly creamy and you can seriously savour the small portion brought to you. They also serve a soft-shell crab slider which is good, but could be great with a better choice of fillings or sauces.

The area between the two restaurants serves a variety of dishes, including sushi that is rather disappointing, appetising pies, a greasy but promising moussaka, some more cuts of meat at an exclusive carving station and grilled salmon that is skippable. The fish pie is warm, mushy and comforting, but for a real dose of fresh seafood (in buckets), walk over to Santorini. You'll find everything from mussels to crayfish here and you can have it all cooked the way you like.

The dessert room is the best part of this brunch. Excellent quality, great variety and taste that will ensure you have at least two servings of each type (we’re guilty). The raspberry tart, pistachio crème brulee, caramel chou pastry and mini summer pies top our favourites list.

The service is top-notch and makes up for everything we don't like. The staff are friendly, courteous and always on top of everything. The brunch is lively, and just what you’d expect from an ideal Friday afternoon outing. Plus, they’re on till 5pm.
