There’s a good reason New York Steakhouse in the Marriott Marquis is a long-standing perennial favourite among residents, and as soon as you set foot into its Friday brunch, you’ll see why.

It’s cleverly tucked away in a corner of the hotel with a separate lift that leads straight to the restaurant entrance and the whole space is bathed in sophistication – the massive leather couches (that are really comfy, by the way), the steel-chain curtains that let the light flood in, the live music set-up and even the open kitchen.

We’re shown to a table by the window and the menu arrives shortly afterwards.

The selection is served with extravagance from the crockery and plating to the flavours and play on textures. In true brunch tradition, we kick off with some delicious surf minus the turf. The surf and bird – rock lobster with a perfectly soft poached egg – has a meaty, heavy texture. A faultless start. The crab benny with Alaskan king crab is perfectly indulgent, too.

Appetisers include a few classics such as a decent French onion soup, lobster bisque and chicken with waffles. We try the foie gras with picked mushroom, sauternes jelly and toasted brioche – easily one of the standout dishes. Also worthy of note is the slow-cooked braised short rib. It’s served with polenta and we can tell this dish is made with love, as the meat simply falls apart with every bite. We’re not entirely sure about the polenta and its consistency at the bottom, though. But the seared scallops. Oh the scallops. This dish comes with pea purée and crunchy bresaola. It’s elegant yet understated – big on simplicity and personality.

Next we move onto the seafood platter for two, and it’s a real showstopper. Meaty king crab leg, king prawns, oysters and possibly some of the best Canadian lobster we’ve eaten in Doha is brought out on a stand that literally turns heads. The lobster is flawless and incredibly fresh. But if you want to go for salad before you hit the seafood, the Caesar is delicious, and packed with anchovies, while the burrata salad comes with bresaola, figs and rocket, providing a great combination of flavours.

The mains menu might induce meat sweats and you may hit a sudden blank at first glance. Rest for a minute and if the dilemma persists, just start at the top and work your way down the list.

The wagyu burger is good, but a bit too salty for our liking, while the beef cheeks are a whole new level of rich, meaty indulgence. The winner, though, is the roast beef trolley. The chef serves us the juiciest meat you’ll probably have at brunch. Herb-roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a selection of sauces come as sides, too.

A cheese trolley then comes our way, with a massive selection. But at this point, we’re unable to even accommodate a whiff of air.

After a breather, we move onto desserts. We love and recommend the mango crêpe. The chocolate soufflé with lychee sauce, however, is really rich, the latter detail being a bit unnecessary, in our opinion.

But overall, this is a decent, generous and hassle-free brunch. Service is consistently good and the live music really improves the ambience. It’s one for grown-ups – you won’t see large groups with noisy kids here. But you will have audibly great conversations and delicious food in a truly sophisticated setting.

The name is apt – The Big Apple Brunch delivers that posh yet edgy vibe you’ll get in New York, without leaving Doha.
